It's a good thing possums breed like rabbits

Jef Taylor reports he spotted an opossum yesterday in Franklin Park:
... These marsupials, having worked their way up from South America only a couple million years ago, are ill-equipped for New England winters. Their hairless tails and ears are frequently frostbitten, and you can tell an older individual (one that has survived at least one winter, and the oldest will only survive about three) by its truncated extremities. If it weren't for their ludicrous litter size and relatively young sexual maturity, they wouldn't make it here. ...

Don't let them in the house by mistake
We have a white and tabby cat with a lot of white on his face. While he and his sister were downstairs eagerly consuming the Fancy Feast du Jour a couple nights ago, a white face appeared at the back door.
My son came very close to letting it in. Then he suddenly realized that it was not Mario LeMiaux (he had been in since nightfall and bugging people for dinner), but a possum of similar size.

that would make it an impossum?
on the boldness of possums
Last year, while driving past the Central Square police station one warm summer night, I saw a possum (an opossum?) stroll right into the station. I wish I'd been in there to see the faces of Cambridge's finest.
Possum Commitatus
I don't even want to think about the all out brawl that would have ensued had that critter actually come into the house - between Mr. LeMiaux and Ms. Aercatt, it would have gotten ugly one way or the other.
And never ...
Feed them after midnight.
