WBZ reports police in Boston will issue tickets to anybody spotted smoking pot at this weekend's Boston Calling in Allston - and that police in Cambridge will be on the alert for anybody lighting up on their way to or from the event across the river.

But the festival is not a public place

It's Harvard property, and you have to pay to go in. So I don't see how the "public consumption" law applies.

Smoking is a public health hazard and edibles aren't. I'm fine w/ cracking down on public smoking of anything.
Harvard says 'no smoking'.

Anywhere on their property.

Their land, their rules.
I like the idea of a smoke free concert. Secondhand smoke has kept me away from all concerts for close to a decade now. It stinks and I don't see why I have to deal with the habit of a smoker. Now if smokers start wearing around enclosed systems, and suck their own secondhand smoke, thereby leaving me with fresh, unmolested air, then I might be open to seeing smokers at events.

and that's fine, but I still don't see how smoking there counts as "public consumption" for the purpose of Boston police giving anyone a ticket. It might be grounds for a trespassing ticket if Harvard or the concert organizers try to evict the smoker and the smoker refuses to leave.
Yeah I think its more of a PR

Yeah I think its more of a PR scare tactic than anything. Police might cite people smoking (or drinking for that mater) on the public sidewalks walking to and from the event but most likely if you smoke on Harvard's grounds they will just ask you to leave. The story on the link has some other weird argument about alcohol being allowed but smoking not.. I think the real issue is that other people don't want to smell the smoke of others not the substance consumed. If you want to be high just take an edible or pill and enjoy.
Ok, so why don't they enforce

Ok, so why don't they enforce the no smoking laws on the common?
Because this way they can bum

Because this way they can bum out a lot of young people and simultaneously make a lot of money in fines.

Are few and far between compared to the concentration of Basics that will be lighting up at Boston Calling.
I've sat dozens and dozens of times on the Common smoking and the cops have driven by without even looking twice. (I'm an old white guy so lets be real here, that helps.)
The cops don't REALLY care, Kino.

I can't take my 5 year old to the Public Gardens or Common because there's people smoking pot every 50 yards. I'm all for people having the right to use marijuana, but it's not a public activity when it affects others; you wanna get high and chill on the Common, grab some edibles.
People aren't smoking it

People aren't smoking it "every 50 yards." I smell it on occasion and in some particular areas... it's not all over the place and it isn't everywhere. I am actually there all the time as I walk through both on my lunch break or running errands.
Does your 5yr old

Have an opinion on the needles, nips, junkies, drunks, panhandlers, and other assorted creeps on the Common too or is this just another case of acute Reefer Madness.
If this truly is a real story then perhaps the big city isn't the place for you.

I take my family there. Never once have we had children get high from other people smoking there.

Public weed smoking is a scourge, and it's only going to get worse. By all means, have a wonderful time stinking up your own domicile, but keep it off the streets.
It's like farting in public. Sure, it makes the farters feel better, but it grosses out everybody around them.
Big difference

Farting is necessary. Toking is not.

Restrooms?
Really?
Fine, Starbucks it is, then.
But really. If you're chambering flats you actually refrain from release until you are in a restroom?
I don't have the discipline.
Nor do I think that is necessary.
I might be thoughtful in an elevator, but that's it.
I don't smoke pot in elevators, either.

If only you cared about scratch tickets, nip bottles, and needles as much as you're worried about weed.
This city would be spotless in 3 days, tops.

Smoking is like owning a dog. If you want to smoke / have a dog on your own property, go ahead but I wish you'd consider other users of public spaces when you assume the right to smoke in parks / overrun parks/fields with your off leash dogs.

Wow; from a story about smoking to blaming dogs... Jesus those 4 legged tokers ruin everything in the city!
It makes me laugh whenever I see these ridiculous posts on UHUB about dogs ruining everything but nary a word form the same folk about all the garbage adults and their kids leave everywhere.

Chill, Roz, no one's talking about arresting these people.

At worst they'll get a fine. More likely they'll be asked to stop and discard whatever they're smoking.
