What made someone so afraid of Ortiz that they wanted him dead.

My best wishes to Big Papi, and hopes for a full recovery.

I havent seen any of this in the Boston press/media or any American media, but the Daily Mail has an story and suggestion about the motive, according to "three law enforcement sources"

Police have not said who was behind the ‘murder for hire’ plot but three law enforcement sources told DailyMail.com it's believed the organizer was a Dominican drug lord who thought Ortiz was having an affair with his girlfriend.

You may know it but for the benefit of anyone who doesn't.

The Daily Mail is not, has never been and will never be a reliable source. Especially in the internet age. Take this is a massive pile of salt.

I believe this nugget was first reported in The New York Post, so...probably totally made up to sell papers/get clicks. Never know though....

I believe this nugget was first reported in The New York Post

I just searched all the articles the NY Post has published on Ortiz and I saw nothing about what was reported. Do you have a link?

Not made up of whole cloth, but photoshops aren't uncommon, especially if they (bad guys) wanted to plant false clues.

"Also wounded in the attack were the Boston baseball legend’s friend, TV host Jhoel Lopez, and a third person."

No mention of a motive in this Post article:
https://nypost.com/2019/06/10/david-ortiz-may-have-been-targeted-by-hire...

The Mail is different. It shows all kinds of verifiable information and documents...that have not been verified at all. FTA: "The memo on the check is translated to read: 'the vehicle purchase'. The check was dated June 10, the Monday after Ortiz was shot."

My two cents..I have serious doubts about the 'girlfriend' story. There's a car involved, a bill of sale, a check (interesting date, if I bought my girlfriend a car then got shot, I'd be reluctant to issue a check...), a bunch of vids and stills, but no real story backup. It's all innuendo and salacious, until proven, bullshit.

There's also some concrete connections to individuals that were in the US at one point, a shooting in Reading, PA, involving gangsters and an armed robbery in New Jersey, involving more gangsters. Is it gang related? Probably. Is it a 'love triangle'? Dunno.

Time will tell. In the meantime, let's hope that the original surgeon did a good job, he avoids complications and we all wish him the best.

I am the anon that posted the Daily Mail article. Daily Mail certainly pushes the boundaries of journalistic taste. They like to show pictures of bloody dead bodies, and publish gory or disgusting details. They have a right wing orientation.

But as far as accuracy, I am not aware of the Daily Mail being any less accurate than more "responsible" or "respected" news sources. And they did allege that there were 3 law enforcement sources that confirmed the alleged love triangle including a drug dealer. Sometimes, as in the case of Anthony Wiener they had some details before everyone else did.

And they are one of only a handful of sources reporting and suggesting a motive, while the rest of the press is only reporting the shooting was connected to a large criminal conspiracy of drug dealers and criminals in and out of prison. The silence of "responsible" journalism is deafening when it comes to a motive.

I think most of us love Big Papi as a baseball player, leader, and good guy. But something smells very rotten here and sadly, I think more salacious details will come.

Has them as pretty biased/unreliable verses other news outlets.

Not much information about this website. Tons of pop ups and misleading click bait may indicate their motive is profit not facts. They seem to be in the fantasy world that there is some kind of glorious truthful middle and then there is the evil right and left. Several sites listed as "left wing bias" are providers of rational, well researched information. So I fact check this website as irrelevant and misleading.

mediabiasfactcheck.com lists the Rand Corporation, Wikipedia, Radio Free Europe, and China Global Television Network (owned by the Chinese government) as all being least biased.

Needless to say, this is NOT a reliable source.

You do realize how many shootings there are in Boston every week?

up

But not as many as in the DR, or even other cities in the US.

How many sports heroes were assassinated this year in the US?

Take your time.

or 3 max per week?

I'd take the under if we're talking about the avg number of shootings per week throughout the course of the year. Obviously expecting a spike in summer

The Globe, Sox fans, the Dominicans, all types, are petrified of people knowing he was stepping out on his wife. What’s the big deal? People cheat on their spouses all the time, get divorces, what have you.... I doubt the general public will care that much.

Just admit that Ortiz messes around on his wife and does steroids. It’s cool. He is still one of the best clutch hitters ever, fun to be around, and has done some positive things.

But people feel the need to turn the guy into a god. Why? Because now that everyone knows there is no such thing as God people are trying to fill that void with athletes, politicians, entertainers, whomever..

He's still on deaths doorstep and there's an active investigation ongoing.

It'll all come out later, but its not really the time people should be concerned about it TBH.

Find the thugs, get better first.

I think he took a step off of "death's doorstep"; last I read he was "stable" and starting to walk a bit.

And, honestly, I am intrigued by why a large group, and growing larger each day it seems, were allegedly involved with a hit on him. Someone who is beloved, as he is, should not be a target in his own country, no?

Sounds like he pissed someone off.

One of the other competing stories when it first was announced was that Ortiz wasn't actually the target - it was his buddy he was with who is a TV personality in the DR. Not saying either is true, as either sound plausible, or maybe its something completely different. No way to know until more actual facts come out.

Maybe not.

Drug lords are hardly known for judicious investigation - actually, they are widely known to be psychopaths with paranoid tendencies.

Maybe Papi stole his girl - maybe she just said that so he wouldn't kill her. Maybe both. Maybe Mr. Druglord was coveting his neighbor's mistress. Who knows?

Including Haiti.

Round up the usual suspects!

That usual suspect has been tied up in court on other matters.

Seriously, I expect this to be "an inspiration" for a future Ace Atkins "Robert Parker's Spenser" novel.
