Third Democrat to challenge Ed Markey

Joe Kennedy III made it official today: He'll be running next year for the US Senate seat now held by Ed Markey. Shannon Liss-Riordan and Steve Pemberton are also running.

If Kennedy wins next year, he will be the third Kennedy to represent Massachusetts in the Senate.

...and leads to a Markey win. Markey is a smart politician, and I wouldn't be surprised if the third candidate has at least his tacit approval. If so, I say good for him.

I'm disgusted with Kennedy for mounting this challenge. It's a waste of money and energy that would better be spent challenging Republican incumbents elsewhere. I have no hatred for the Kennedy clan, but there is absolutely no compelling reason for Kennedy to run other than fulfilling some self-perceived destiny. Markey has been good for the Commonwealth and good for the country, and if the good guys take control of the Senate, his seniority would matter greatly (and if we don't the Senate, the country is lost anyway).

Shame on Kennedy. I hope he loses the Senate primary and his House seat.

The third candidate declared months ago, back when Joe was just beginning his transformation from moderate Democrat to whatever he is today (but maybe Markey knew more than the rest of us?).

I guess I wasn't paying enough attention. But I bet she'll be seeing an uptick in donations!

Good guys??? Please provide details on how Markey has been good for the Commonwealth and good for the country.

Possibly more than 'self perceived' but that is certainly a part of it.
Much easier to run for President (An icon of the Democratic Party! Our savior! The One that can defeat whoever runs after Trump's second term!) as a sitting Senator.

He's thinking 2024 and I bet he's not alone.

Unfortunately, that didn't stop Mass voters from voting Capuano out of the house... Too many people want "change" and will vote out incumbents in favor of fresh faces, even to their own disadvantage.

I would support her run for governor, or even better, her run for Senate if our Senior Senator gets a promotion.

No reason to run after Markey though.

In a thinly veiled attempt to thwart another Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the DSCC and DCCC have said that they will blackball campaign consultants working with primary challengers to incumbent members of congress. I wonder if they will stick to that when it comes to a challenge from the right like Kennedy, instead of from the left. Something tells me they won't.

...why you think Kennedy is to the right of Markey?

Well for starters, Markey co-authored the Green New Deal. Kennedy has nearly $2 million dollars invested in fossil fuel companies (https://readsludge.com/2019/09/16/mulling-run-agai...).

Trust Fund Entitlement

Kennedy is running only because he thinks he is owed. That's more of a GOP attitude.

Hahaha

See Hillary Clinton, Kennedy, Cuomo, Brown.

I’ll give you the Bush’s, but please.

Three words: You're new here.

You might want to use www.duckduckgo.com (The search engine that doesn't track you!) and look up Joseph P. Kennedy. No Roman numerals...

He couldn't wait a few years, and maybe build up some kind of record in the House?

Markey will demolish him. No contest.

That's clearly the motto of this Kennedy. I'm not impressed, and will gladly vote for some other Democrat to take his House seat.
