Tahiti in Dedham sold, but could stay open for another couple years

Yes, it's a rumor that seems to pop up every few months, but this time records at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds show that the owners of the Tahiti, on Mah Way (not the highway), sold the building and its roughly 1 acre of land to a Dedham home builder, Frank Gobbi, last month for $2.9 million.

According to somebody who has spoken to the Mahs, they have a deal to keep the restaurant and lounge open for at least a couple more years.

The Tahiti is one of a dwindling number of Polynesian restaurants in the Boston area, which sell potent drinks and a combination of traditional fried Chinese-American fare and dishes that are heavy on pineapples. The Tahiti adds 50s-era music on the PA to the mix.

Bali Hai, in Lynnfield, closed earlier this year.

I'll admit I drive out there to go to Costco, Legacy, Dick's etc... more than I'd like but that has to be one of poorest served by good public transportation towns inside 128, no? I was going to say they should develop this lot and the one across the street with the paint store into housing but that's just going to create more traffic unless they put in bus lanes on Washington St.

Reopen the Dedham spur off of the Needham line, that's what I'm saying. So we have to knock down a few houses, big whoop.

If you go to Google Maps and call up the area between the West Roxbury Star Market (where the spur used to join the Needham Line) and the Route Formerly Known as 1, you can follow the old spur by the green path of trees along it. Yeah, there are some houses there now. And you'd have to put the bridge back over Spring Street and repurchase the land the T or somebody sold to the residents along the way so they could extend their backyards, and I suspect Star wouldn't be too happy to give up much of their parking lot for a train track (interesting: the map seems to show the route of the old right of way across the Star parking lot).

Of course, it's all easy for me to say - I don't live in any of those houses.

. .and the folks that built homes on Belle Ave where the tracks used to be might get abit miffed.

Those houses are HUGE, so yeah...they'd strongly object.

Reopen the Dedham spur from Readville.

Amongst other things, that would make the people who don't want the trail that some want on the line from going in happy.

Of course, as I always say, if money were no object they should bore a tunnel up Washington Street to Route 128 and extend the Orange Line, but since money is in fact an object and a finite resource, I won't hold my breath.

You can take the commuter rail and a bus that runs half hourly at times (the envy of some parts of the country) to Legacy Place. Just saying.

Dedham wants to be a car place. It's not in the city. It's a suburban town with great proximity to Boston, but it is indeed NOT Boston, nor does it want to be. It's happy the way it is. If driving is that big a deal for you, don't come.

(insert sad face)

I don't frequent the Tahiti like I once did when I could handle a good hangover but it will be missed. So many good times there.

Don't come over here
Piss on my gate
Save it just keep it off Mah Way

Keep it off Mah Way
Keep it off Mah Way, Mah Way
Keep it off Mah Way
Keep it off Mah Way
Keep it off Mah Way, Mah Way

To think I did all that
And may I say - not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it Mah Way
For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it Mah Way
Yes, it was Mah Way

Isn't that the guy who's been fighting with Dedham over the property directly opposite the Endicott Estate for decades? It's been going on since I was a kid, and I'm no spring chicken.
(back from Google; apparently it's the guy's son Frank Jr., who appears to have followed in the old man's footsteps)

the property directly opposite the Endicott Estate for decades?

That land is known locally as the Gobbi desert.

It's like a Dedham's Greatest Hits, or maybe MadLibs. (Afaik, the Gobbi family's not much into restaurants, but I could be wrong.)

To the rare detractor I may have accidentally garnered along the way here.....

For the longest time, I would go in to pick up my food at Tahiti and the cashier would see me and yell out "Kevin James!!"
