![BMC protesters say they care](https://universalhub.com/files/styles/main_image_-_bigger/public/images/2019/bmc.jpg)
Some 200 Boston Medical Center doctors, nurses and other staffers stood in front of Boston Medical Center today, in what they said was a protest against a visit by two representatives of a homophobic and anti-immigrant federal government but more important and a message to patients that hospital staffers will do whatever it takes to protect them from an administration determined to get rid of them.
"We're here to provide a safe place for them," Dr. Sara Stulac, a BMC pediatrician, said.
Stulac and other protesters stood on a lawn on the Harrison Avenue side of Boston Medical Center. The hospital barred reporters from going on the lawn to talk to protesters, but several walked over to the reporters gathered on a sidewalk.
Eduardo Garza, a family-medicine and psychiatry resident, agreed that the key message from the protest is one to patients: That they can continue to come to BMC for care and that he and others will treat them without question.
"There's a big fear that our patients are not going to feel safe," he said, adding some immigrant patients have already shown signs of anxiety that they might be targeted by the federal government and deported.
Dr. Kelley Saia, an OB/Gyn and director of a program that helps new mothers with substance-abuse problems, said she was particularly frustrated because the visit by Trump and her husband's secretary of health and human services - focusing on a program that seeks to help the babies, was leaving out the mothers, who are just as important to the babies' futures as anything the hospital can do for them.
"You can't have a healthy baby without a healthy mom," she said.

Liz said it is simple the people who work in the Medical Insurance companies and hospitals, they could just work in the Life or Auto Insurance industry???? Makes sense but who will have the money to buy Life insurance or even Automobiles ( oh we will all be riding bikes by then).

represents an important values-shift in this country that is totally compatible with real capitalism, just not the exploitative psychotic variety so many have come to accept.
it IS unfortunate that people who have chosen to work in an exploitative, anti-human industry might lose their jobs. that IS sad, especially because many of them do not have the moral compass to really comprehend what they are involved in. confused, unemployed people should concern us--they bear some responsibility for having wanted to work in the ponzi scheme--we bear some responsibility to make sure they have healthcare via medicare for all.

Would be a perfectly fine newspaper to cite. But if we're talking about the economic effects of new policy and taxes then I think the work of economists might be better. This is pretty wonky stuff (and also incredibly boring to read) so any real argument would be a bit over my head and certainly over the head of reporters from the times, cnn, fox, the wsj and most other media outlets. It's probably likely that smart economists could make arguments favoring two different policies. What's the joke about economists?... "on the one hand _____ on the other hand ____"

Clearly the doctors in countries with universal healthcare for all are all struggling for pay. Know who will have the money for life insurance or automobiles? The folks that don't have to pay a surprise $300 bill for blood work at a physical, or nearly $900k for a premature birth.

Paying attention to details is key here. She is talking people who work at healthcare insurers. The people at Blue Cross, Harvard Pilgrim, etc. Not doctors and nurses. At BMC maybe the army of people that have to work with insurers to get bills paid will be let go. But that just means more money for clinical needs, not admins.
Are you still in a tizzy? I’ve worked on the admin side of healthcare for 29 years. It’s a mess, with tons of waste just because of the headaches with billing and insurance. Go Elizabeth Warren!

The Trump administration is engaged in an increasingly bitter war against both immigrants and LGBTQ - not Melania directly perhaps, but certainly HHS Secretary Azar, who was also on the trip.
Just last week, the Washington Post reported: Proposed HHS rule would strip Obama-era protections for LGBTQ individuals. Granted, the issue there was adoption, not medical care, but, really, it wouldn't be too hard to find examples more directly related to people getting care at BMC (both LGBTQ and immigrants).
Now Boston Medical Center, which serves these communities has invited these Trump-administration people in. It doesn't just highlight a valuable program the hospital is providing but provides a boost to the Trump administration - look, they care! Only they don't.
So hospital staffers are protesting any seeming connection with people who would harm their patients.

They are protesting that a representative of an administration that has hurt children in numerous ways, from cutting back on programs that feed them and provide health care, to tearing them away from their parents and caging them at the border, is showing up to cuddle babies for photo ops. Not too hard to understand, really.
