Will the last one out turn off the lights? Herald editor jumps ship to TV station

Sciacca

With his staff approaching an asymptote of zero, longtime Herald Editor Joe Sciacca reports that after 37 years at the Herald, he's leaving for a job as enterprise editor at WHDH:

Excited about this new chapter and proud of the incredible work by my Herald newsroom colleagues that keeps that important voice alive. I'll remain a loyal reader, that's for sure!

Sciacca had not actually devoted his full attention to the Herald since April, when the hedge fund that now owns the rapidly shrinking tabloid named him regional editor in chief of the seven newspapers it currently owns in Massachusetts in New York.

But bad news for channel 7. The Herald has been publishing extremist right wing garbage for a long time. Good sports and sometimes good local reporting, but mostly extremist right wing garbage.

It's the Herald of television news.

For historical context, in 1972 the Boston Herald Traveler owned WHDH-TV. Both are not quite the same things that they were at the time.

I remember in the 60s when Boston had three daily newspapers. the Boston Globe, the Record American and the Herald Traveler. Of these three, the Record American was the right wing tabloid and most resembled the Herald of today. The Herald Traveler was a bit on the "intellectual" side. Something like the old Christian Science Monitor, if you will. And the Globe was still in it's glory days, before it's serious decline. In the early 70s the Record American and the Herald Traveler merged (I think) which begat the Herald American. The Herald American was pretty much a clone of the Globe, in format and almost in politics (though still slightly to the right), but it was refreshing to have done away with the trite right wing tabloid rag. In the 80s it reverted to the old right wing rag style and became the Boston Herald. Nobody remembers that 1970s breath-of-fresh-air era of Boston newspapers now.

doesn't support right wing garbage publications. Or American writers thereof.

How Randian.

Newspapers and Radio are on life support, TV
may stick around for the foreseeable future.
Can't blame him for taking care of his future.

I'm surprised every morning that the Herald is still there in printed form. At what point does it become unsustainable for the Herald to pay the Globe to print a pamphlet with no advertising, then deliver it to a handful of subscribers? When does the Globe shut down the Taunton plant? Will both papers be printed at Staples?

Along those lines I'm wondering if the BH Paywall ha shelped or hurt their readership numbers...
