Brookline-class turkeys terrorize Hyde Park street

Two pair of tom toughs who have been disrupting life along one side of the George Wright Golf Course for months now are back and worse than ever. A frustrated, angry resident reports from Myopia Road.

They literally charged from across the street at my husband carrying my 4 and 2 year olds into the car. Im almost 9 months pregnant. We cant even leave our house without them trying to attack us. I refuse to feed them. No one in the city is any help (Police, 311, Animal Control, Environmental Police) I’ve called them all. Is there ANYTHING that can be done?

Well, given that they're on Myopia Road... maybe they're mistaken and these are really large chickens? Enraged chickens.

I asked an ornithologist friend (well, an ornery friend, anyway) and he decided to duck the question.

I guess regardless of the species, it was a foul attack either way.

You won't look that out of place weilding a golf club, looking for a lost ball. ;-)

I suggest a heavy old driver from a thrift store.
Is it animal cruelty if in self-defense?

It would interesting to see how they react to a super soaker or CO2 fire extinguisher.

If you want to discuss sanctuary cities, go find a forum on that topic.

So, someone made a sanctuary comment about Myopia Road and you deleted it. Aren't you being a little...shortsighted?

Not saying to go all Capt. Danelicki on the turkeys, but is it permissible to spray pepper spray near the birds to repel them?

The whole point of the "pepper" in pepper spray goes back to plants that were naturally selected because they did a lot better when their seeds were eaten and dispersed by birds rather than mammals.

In other words, pepper spray likely does little or nothing to irritate birds. Birds are not affected by capsicum - mammals are.

I guess maybe spraying them with gravy would work better then, to make them worry about being eaten and all.

Paintball pistol?

With gravymaster pellets.

...or, if your college dining hall was managed by DAKA, threaten them with a supersoaker filled with "supreme sauce"

I was running up Poplar, just north of Myopia, and these two had a good long traffic jam. No one wanted to run them over it seemed; saw a taxi driver get out to try to shoo them off, but he ended up retreating to his car.

For what it's worth, they didn't care at all about a pedestrian, they were completely focused on the cars. Nevertheless, while they might not be big enough to win a fight, could probably inflict a few good wounds.

“Help! All 3 of my au pairs have today off! I can’t fend for myself in the real world! Why did I have so many kids?!”

You live in an odd version of the world. I do feel sad for you, if that makes you feel better.

The au-pair employers were the worst, and I think he was making a comparison. But I think the anti turkey people are just mistaken. Massachusetts was teeming with animal life before we arrived. When you think about what is happening with climate change, I believe we need to be much more tolerant of what are actually natural conditions. Like the seals on cape cod. White sharks have actually killed someone, but we need to see that their presence is natural and benefits our sea shore in ways beyond our understanding. Turkeys are annoying, but they are supposed to live here. They have pecked people, and it feels intimidating I am sure. If they do have to cull them, I hope they are eaten.

You might try driving (oh, wait, bicycling) down Myopia Road one of these days (like we did today, to look for the turkeys, but, alas, they were not out). Nobody on that street has three au pairs. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if nobody on the street has an au pair.

The guy (or gal) doesn't set foot outside of JP much, and he certainly would never go south of Forest Hills. He's content to live in a very, very narrow world. Still, a visit to Hyde Park might startle him (or her.)

I did see the turkeys on Thursday morning on West by Myopia. Two of them. Blocked a car, then went to the side and started pecking at it.

Pecked at a car? Oh heavens!

I guess I have my karma dream, now.

They peck people, too

I did a quick Google search for wild turkey lacerations/attacks/hospital

Nada. Just car accidents and bullying.

I did find this:

Can a wild turkey hurt you?
A Wild Turkey Can Hurt You. There are many ways in which a wild turkey can hurt you. The first way is when you have done everything right to harvest a particular bird and he gives you the slip every time you think that you are about to close the deal. ... Then there is the bird that won't answer your calls.

Seriously, I stopped searching after I saw that the guys from Jackass or Wild Boys never had a wild turkey segment. I loved their banana stunt with the gorilla.

That being said, I think that we need the turkeys. They are a natural part of this area and we need to realize that killing everything that gets in our way is bad for us in the long term.

Don’t blame just me for poking fun at residents complaining about every little thing. You certainly have pointed it out in the past with things like the Brookline police log. It’s in good fun. Or at least I thought.

Just stupid.

Well, judging by most of your posts, yes, but still.

The short of it is that people in Hyde Park don’t have au pairs. Perhaps in the trust fund laden world you inhabit they do, but not in the rest of the world.

I'm guessing there are probably a few Hyde Park residents who have nannies or Au Pairs. But the joke wasn't funny either way, that's the issue.

I also think that neighborhood is one of the best in Boston. There are a few houses that border parkland there that I always wanted to buy. Kind of like the Grove but not as unique.....

The roads there are all paved, unlike in the Grove.

But there are a few poorly paved roads behind the Boston Trinity Academy.....Not the same I know but close.
