Fabulously Out There chronicles NStar's successful effort to make one East Boston street far uglier by replacing a single utility pole with two utility poles bolted together.
She bets they'd never do that in Brookline or Cambridge. The program is, however, working just fine in Roslindale as utilities continue to file endless reams of paperwork on how slowly they are replacing their backlogs of such double poles.

...NSTAR just turns the power off at night without telling us. I'll trade unannouced outages for ugly double posts any day.

But, some HAVE been removed recently. You've got me curious about the double pole in Cambridge on Sherman St. by Masse's -- the one that actually leans into the street. I'll be by there today, so I'll see if its been fixed yet.

There are some scary ones in Cambridge that at first I assumed were temporary, but they've been there for years.
I'm sure someone has figured out the engineering and pragmatics, but they aren't that pretty.

There's a very scary double pole on Malvern Street in Allston, at the corner of Gardner. I pass it all the time and hate walking near it - the older pole leans out at a crazy angle and looks ready to topple. It's another one that's been there for several years as well.

I don't work for Nstar, but I do work for another utility company... This happens a lot. And by the looks of [the] pictures, it's the phone and cable companies in your area who are responsible for the old pole still being there.
Nstar has transferred their facilities to the new pole, but the telecommunications companies haven't.
Just thought I'd let you know who to point the finger at. ;)
