New Lechmere station coming together

New Green Line tracks coming from Lechmere station

Tim Murphy got a bird's eye view of the work on the Green Line Extension at Lechmere:

Lechmere Station taking shape. In this “Dissected” style view, you can see what will become the center island platform with the eastbound track to the right and the westbound on the left.

The Green Line Extension is "big dig" level obsession with me. It took me *far* too long to internalize that the entire thing was being built at once. So cool.

In that it is being paid for by the developers who are building around the new location. It is agreed on mitigation that has been in the works since before the market crash of 08. It's finally being built but isn't the same thing as the State's promise to do the GLX. That also is in the early stages and work is being done, but believe it when you see it.

Cambridge Crossing is paying next to nothing. The City of Cambridge is paying millions for one station

The same thing goes for Cambridge. They have been pleading for years to rebuild Lechmere Station and the Lechmere Viaduct. Baker gave them a s-sandwich. The state will pay for both, if they fork over $25 million without conditions for the GLX. In most circles. That's extortion. Every other private group has gotten away with paying pennies.

All part of GLX. 7 stations all by GLXC.

I recall hearing about that swap (then involving Guilford Rail Systems and their partners) ten years earlier than that.

The GLX is riddled with major construction flaws. Its the reason why the bridge openings were pushed back by over six months. After the Wollaston Station disaster, a new station falling apart after a few months, attention has turned to the GLX. Alongside the construction errors, the silica exposure along the GLX is growing each day. They tried to build the GLX on a shoestring budget. Its failing miserably.

Do you have a source for this information?

My second office looks out across the GLX spaghetti pictured in the photo. We're within the GLX notice range where they slap stickers on our doors. The construction site is not secure, rat infested, and filled with trash. You see something fall off the spaghetti nearly every day. GLXC builds something, then tears it down, builds something, then tears it down. Almost like on-site construction education. They gave us silica dust notices and told us not to breath around the site, seriously! When it started a panic, they removed the silica posts and said everything is good. We're going to find out the GLX is a goner on a Friday at 5:32pm right before a big event.

As long as Lechmere Rug is still there it's OK. (Not to be confused with...)

It wasn’t Lechmere sales without Lechmere Square, which it still is.
