White people run amok downtown, battle police, loot stores

A peaceful vigil and protest march from Nubian Square to the State House organized by young black people turned heavily white and violent as night fell. As the protest dispersed from the Common, crowds began streaming towards Downtown Crossing, throwing bottles and then bricks at police officers and cruisers.

On Summer Street outside Macy's one Boston officer needed to be taken to the hospital after and M-80 went off right next to him. People also set off fireworks at Tremont and Boylston streets. Another officer was hit with a brick on Tremont Street near Suffolk Law School.

Skylight Jewelers on School Street, across from Old City Hall, was smashed into and looted. A similar scene played out at the Walgreens on Washington Street and later at the Marshalls, also on Washington Street, and the CVS at Washington and Milk. Several storefronts on Temple Place were smashed.

Looting eventually extended along Newbury and Boylston streets, including the Saks Fifth Avenue in the Prudential Center, the CVS, Hermes, H&M and Talbots stores on Boylston Street, stores in Copley Place and the Uggs store on Newbury Street.

Several cruisers had their windows smashed in, some while officers were still inside. A Transit Police officer was surrounded in his cruiser at Beacon and Charles streets as a crowd smashed his windows and rendered his vehicle unusable. Just as Boston cops arrived to relieve him, a similar incident happened to anther Transit cop on Beacon in front of the State House.

One Boston cruiser was set on fire in front of the Beantown Pub on Tremont Street; a WHDH car was similarly torched at Washington and Essex streets.

Police fired tear gas at the crowds several times both on the Common and along Tremont Street.

Some 30 National Guard members were bused into town. They were originally supposed to link up with a State Police contingent and sweep down Washington Street, but were diverted to clear a path for Boston firefighters trying to get to a set fire at Washington and Essex streets. Officers from Brookline, Revere, Everett, Medford and other suburbs were eventually deployed downtown to assist BPD.

The MBTA shut Downtown Crossing, Park Street, Arlington, Boylston, Prudential and Charles/MGH stations and halted all downtown bus service.

If a peaceful event was organized by white people, and later turned heavily black and violent, would it be acceptable to phrase it that way?

Only that hasn't happened.

You know, in the interest of 'more light, less heat'? because, I'll say, I didn't see a lot of actual arresting going on in front of the cameras.

Both BPD and TPD were making arrests, but I guess we'll find out tomorrow just how many - BPD tends to release the numbers relatively quickly (like they did with the people arrested on the march the other day from the South End into Roxbury). But, yes, especially early on, it sound like they were concentrating more just on trying to move people out of the area rather than arresting them.

Again, on Channel 5.
Copley place probably doesn't have a thing left on the shelves. Even the low priced bargains went in an hour long 'two for nothing' sale. No effort at slowing it down until now.

Cars pulling up, people getting out, picking up passengers with armloads of stuff. A lot of smart phone coordination going on between looters and drivers.

Total breakdown in security. This is just looting and has absolutely nothing to do with the killing of George Floyd.

Two people that dont know each other gave the same story of a peaceful protest turning ugly after it ended and park street was closed. They were asked to leave area and as they were coming back up from station with no where else to go they were sprayed with pepper spray. One of them said white people on fence therefore started throwing water bottles and trash to defend the pepper spray victims. Also said there is footage of police damaging their own vehicle. I haven’t seen that footage but she said they have it.

You can see the cruiser was already smashed up as the cops got up on the hood, so there's another possible explanation for what you're seeing:

The protesters surrounded it and started banging on it. Police then regained control of that bit of Tremont and took out the smashed-in windshield so that somebody could drive the thing away more safely.

I don't know what time that incident was, but there was a cruiser in front of the Beantown Pub that was wrecked by rioters. Then try tried to set it on fire, but police arrived and got them away. Then those cops were called off and, surprise, the rioters returned and this time succeeded in setting it on fire.

I’m sympathetic to the plight of George Floyd and to the cause of the protests, but the kid making this video seems out of his element. Apart from not being a Boston resident talking about the “Boston State House” and thinking Chinatown was Roxbury, he’s not about to get any awards for hard-hitting citizen journalism. That’s an opportunistic young guy with a smartphone.

Anyhow, I have some notes:

  • The looters shown on TV seemed young and I have little doubt that the fact their faces were caught by cameras will go unchecked.
  • Stolen stuff is likely insured and nobody died in Boston last night, so far.
  • I would have been a lot more upset if they’ve broken into the BPL and started burning books: they looted high-end stores. We saw a park bench and some trash cans on fire. That’s all replaceable.
  • The main message seems to still fall on tone-deaf ears: black people are being given far more scrutiny for misdeeds than white counterparts and that is some bullshit and you know that’s true. The value of black lives are seen as being less-than by white people with the ability to end them and/or obtain justice for those lives lost. Check out the cries of racism here against Adam for his headline because of white fragility (and you know that’s true: dig deep).

White folks should have some self-reckoning to do about personal values if they haven’t already.

But you haven't seen the footage, it must be true!

This is the most inflammatory false article that has ever been posted on Uhub. There have been a few times that Adam has let his emotions get the better of him, and this is definitely one. The article is false in every sense of the word.

This isn't reporting, it's grasping at straws to blame anyone else but the young black people doing the looting and vandalism last night.

I personally witnessed hundreds of black looters last night and this morning until the sun came up. And groups of young black people destroying police cruisers and throwing very large rocks at police in downtown crossing. PERSONALLY WITNESSED, not heard about a video.

I saw footage of police removing the windshield of a police vehicle that claimed to be evidence of the police damaging their own car and I also saw video of that same vehicle having it's windshield broken by non-police. I think the police were removing the broken glass so that they could more safely move the vehicle in this case. IDK, maybe there is other footage out there but that's the story as I understand it.

up
Voting closed 0

I saw that video of the police "destroying their own car" and I had to almost morbidly laugh. As if they would go destroy their own cruiser in open air in front of a million cell phones. If they were setting up protestors they would smash it up off site, tow it in and then unveal it after a few big flash bangs and smoke bombs. Like a magic trick.

They were clearly trying to prep the car for transport out of the zone and the shattered windshield and other items hanging off get in the way. I've seen enough wrecks removed to know the drill.

up
Voting closed 0

That conspiracy theory about cops destroying their own vehicle was been debunked long ago, so why am I still seeing it? There's video of protesters dancing on the police car destroying the windshield. The cops then knocked it out so it could be driven away. Anyone repeating this lie clearly has an agenda and does not care about truth.

up

I saw a very peaceful protest. Whites walking beside blacks. The looting was not due to the protesters. It was due to people coming into Boston, seizing the moment to wreak havoc on our City. They were white as well as black people who were looting that came in via vehicles, just to do that. The protesters were walking. I don't know where you got your information, but I was watching it.

Because a bunch of, I'll go out on a limb here and call them suburban white kids who don't give a shit about Boston come into town and have a night of fun - at the expense of black people who are grieving over what happened in Minneapolis and the owners of small businesses downtown, not to mention cops who don't deserve to have bricks thrown at their heads.

Wishful thinking.

up
Voting closed 0

It was interesting. Lotsa white folks, but enough black protesters (well, no, no signs, so not really protesters) so that it wasn't a total cracker factory. Actually, they weren't really protesting.
Hard to protest with your arms full. Looked like a young crowd, but since the base of arrests is virtually nil and all were wearing masks, we'll probably never know where they're from.

This is a total fucking disgrace. No security for the shops, cops literally driving by on motorcycles not stopping, one hell of a message to send to the merchant class of Newbury Street.

Fuck you, merchants.

Hey, politicians, this one is on you. With your bickering, virtue signalling and posturing for the media, you managed to get Newbury Street looted. I hope you enjoyed watching it on TV because I sure as hell didn't see you down there trying to stop it. So, what will you say to the public tomorrow?

You want to lose the urban cores? This is how you lose the urban cores.

Everything will be fine on Newbury st. There’s insurance for that. White people will be fine and police will be fine. Black people on the other hand still will not be fine. Still be shot for holding a cell phone, smothered for a counterfeit $20, murdered for reaching for license that was asked for. Let’s focus on the REAL problem and less on the looting.
While sitting in my favorite spot in South Boston to eat or have drinks I have been approached to buy stolen goods at least once a week. Like it’s a normal thing. Where is the outrage? Customers and restaurant staff seem to be fine with it all then. It’s laughed off like no big deal.

up

Where is your outrage on George Floyd’s murder? Does it exist? After you burn my house down are you going to Minneapolis and beat an unarmed police officer and knee his throat til he dies? You know just to show the police that it’s wrong?

up
Voting closed 0

I am outraged that Derek Chauvin was allowed to be a cop in the first place. He had previous violent incidents. Which Amy Klobuchar refused to prosecute.

I am outraged that police culture creates an echo chamber where cops have convinced themselves that the dangers of their job are far beyond reality.

I am outraged that our police force has become overly militarized since 9-11.

I am outraged that Alan Grayson's 2014 bill to reverse this was overwhelming opposed by both parties.

I am outraged that the police, who are supposed to be public servants, treat regular people as the enemy.

And I am outraged that the policies instituted by politicians (mostly Democrats in extraordinarily safe mayorships and governships) encourage militaristic policing.

But if you think any of this justifies what we saw last night then you can fuck right off.

That looting isn't about George Floyd. It doesn't help anyone's cause. Just as the police officers who abuse their power and hurt people needs to be punished and held accountable, so do people who incite violence, steal, cause bodily harm to innocent people, and destroy; in the name of a cause that is exactly what the cause is opposing.

Neiman Marcus is empty.

Looting until the place is scrap seems to be the MO of the crowd.
No fighting, plenty for everybody. I like it when black and white people can get along.
12:15---Nat'l Guard and Boston PD starting to move in. Just in time.

One car was actually toilet papered. No, really. Just plain odd.

What I noticed is that there are a lot, and I mean a significant percentage of people that are wearing black pants, black hoodies pulled tight and masks. Absolutely no fear of getting caught with stolen goods.

To answer your Q, it would suck, but what’s the end game here?

I’ve seen claims that protestors do this because peaceful protests don’t yield results.

So if you destroy cities, now prosecutors will hold murderous cops accountable? They should be doing that already but never do, and we’ve seen cities burned to the ground before.

Honestly, there’s no way to ever stop shit like this. Doctors, lawyers, cops, politicians, celebrities... they either know the right people, have tons of money, or both... and everything gets swept under the carpet until much later.... then they’ll say “we need to do better.”

The whole thing is a joke.

Tonight's protests were motivated by a righteous desire for equality, justice, and accountability in our country. I see you. I hear you. I will use my voice for you.

I am angered, however, by the people who came into our city and chose to engage in acts of destruction and violence, undermining their message. If we are to achieve change and if we are to lead the change, our efforts must be rooted in peace and regard for our community.

I want to thank the officers of the Boston Police Department and all of the public safety agencies for their professionalism tonight. They are working hard, as they always do, to keep our city safe and treat our residents with respect.

If the leash was taken off the police as soon as they started receiving incoming rocks, bricks, and bottles, it wouldn’t have got this bad. Instead, the city administration ordered them to stand there and be emasculated and physically abused as if that’s part of their job. My heart broke for those cops last night, not because of the danger they faced, but because Boston City Hall ordered them not to fight back.

Why was this event scheduled for 6:30pm?!?

I understand the argument to include essential workers, but Sunday's typically afford the majority of essential workers the opportunity to protest.

Something about the late evening start of this protest seemed off/suspect.

Moving forward perhaps the city should attempt to limit attempts to organize protests that could run past 6pm, and those of us who support BLM abstain from evening protests so as not to "provide cover" for those with destructive purposes (looting/arson/weapons).

I have been to other protests on Boston Common or the State House steps that started at 6 pm (even in colder seasons when it was dark earlier). None of them led to this kind of chaos.

The protests were peaceful. When the sun went down the looters came out to take advantage of the crowds.

Unfortunately this does mean that in thus current environment, protesters are probably best advised to hold/ attend events earlier in the day.

I’ve read that the 6:30 pm march was not sponsored by BLM. Also that the flyers had “Attire: black” which was a way for anarchists and looters to blend in with everyone else. So much disinformation out there, trying to figure out what’s really happening.

Does anybody know if the car that drove into the crowd of protesters at the corner of Tremont and Boylston was an unmarked cruiser or non-police?

As a descendant of Dominican parents, this headline is trite. What the rioters consisted of were these Liberal college kids and inner-city kids. I saw them heading towards the Downtown area after the peaceful protest around 6pm. One person even lit a firework across the street from me. So for you to feed to the hateful rhetoric that you accuse Trump of espousing is hilarious, Adam. I like that you post news of the recent spikes in crime here but I can never take your political leanings serious. Stay safe, y'all

White people.

Yes, there were black people out last night, but it was the white guys, who as people at the State House saw (it's the first link in my post), were white people trying to incite the cops. They succeeded, beyond their wildest imaginings.

You are aware that every local college shut down and its students went home over two months ago, right?

I saw lots of tweets from protestors saying they were "trapped" downtown when the MBTA began having trains bypass downtown stations. The idea to just start walking until you reached an open station (Kendall, South Staion, Back Bay and Copley all seemed to still be open, and the Blue Line was being bused anyway) apparntly did not occur to any of those Tweeting. Lots of suburbanites I would guess who have no idea how to walk in the city.

What news story are you watching? Absolutely a racist post claiming "

white people ran amok

" in this incident. You should not have an outlet for your racist rants claiming to be a journalist.

Disqusting....and we will never read your posts again. Too bad, as I felt you had a good forum and building a strong journalism site. All destroyed by a stupid, racist rant on your behalf.

Shame on you!

SAD!

What bothers me is that people are arguing over who is looting but some people still will not condemn it.

Regardless of who is looting we should be able to stand and say this is bullshit and sadly there are people who will not do that.

Adam, they were mostly black looting. As clear from your comments, pretty much anyone watching the coverage noticed. There were almost no whites looting the stores on Newbury Street or at Copley Place. Not even many Hispanics. They were almost all Black. Can you stick to accurate reporting, not take your anti-white axe to grind to what used to be (though not so much anymore, with your extreme TDS) a great website for local reporting in Boston. And please don't try to pull the race card on me, I am a dark skinned Hispanic, and if it were all fellow Dominicans and Puerto Ricans doing the looting, I'd admit that. It was vast majority Black. Don't lie.

But yeah... whites did NOT have a monopoly on the looting, protesting, rioting or whatever.

Even if they did who gives a shit??

whether it's black or white or aliens.... it's distracting from the message that there's a black hole where Blue accountability is concerned

I was there for the entire thing. The MAJORITY of the looters were white people and it's like a lot of y'all can't face that fact. Your word doesn't matter more than a white person's word. We (black folks) know how the majority of y'all hispanics don't like us. Just like you and the other racists on this post probably can't admit that the MAJORITY of pedophiles are white and that's something that we all should be talking about on a daily basis. But no y'all are worried about fucking people stealing items from stores, but not worried about these monsters stealing a child's innocence. If anyone sees this comment as racist I don't give a fuck because I know who i am and what I am and it's not racist to state the facts.

State Rep. Mike Connolly (D-Somerville, Cambridge) makes the case.

I've taken part in a few peaceful protests.
I once saw rioting, from a very safe distance.
I have never seen Looting before, in person anyway.
Obviously I have never been in a BLM March.

Some people where looking for an excuse to loot and the police were happy to provide one.

So the cops are responsible for people stealing and destroying property? You’re a lost cause.

Saw a bunch of reports of tear gas being fired indiscriminately into the crowd after the sun set. No discernible motive beyond wanting to disperse the crowd as quickly as possible.

Turns out that if you launch chemical weapons at a huge crowd of peaceful protesters, some of them get angry about it and destroy your cars. Who knew?
