Outdoor dining returns to some Boston restaurants

Pilotblock South End took a stroll down Columbus Avenue in the South End today - the first day that restaurants could re-open their outdoor patio, with enough space between tables.

Covid-19 stats over the next couple of weeks could determine when restaurants can re-open some of their indoor dining space.

Although Mayor Walsh has spoken of ways to let restaurants that don't currently have patios add outdoor seating - he has yet to release formal plans for where and how exactly that will be allowed.

European style dining in my Boston?

Who do I call to shut this down? Heavens me. What's next, closing a street to cars?

How are these restaurants able to take up the entire sidewalk like this? With diners eating & drinking without masks, how can pedestrians safely pass by?

J, if you've never seen sidewalk dining in Boston before then you should explore something beyond your immediate neighborhood. Furthermore: this isn't European style dining, or whatever that is! Plenty of non-Euro countries have outdoor dining. Once the pandemic is over you may want to consider international travel... for instance, South America has many wonderful places to visit and cultures to explore!

Of course closing the streets to cars might help free up some space.

Doesn't of course deal with accessibility issues that members of our community have.

The street in front of Maggiano's is so wide and sees very little traffic. There's really no good reason why a large part of it cannot be carved out for outdoor dining.

That is easily taken care of through either building a temp ramp at the curb or purchasing something from a local ramp company: https://www.amramp.com/residential/residential-portable-ramps/

Yes, the link says residential, but they probably have something that can support commercial levels of use.

And yes, even as a driver, I say take some (not all, please) parking spots to assist the restaurants.
