The chain has been closing storefront and shopping mall locations for years. Most of their remaining shops are in institutional settings such as airports, train stations, hospitals, and universities.
Talked to one of their managers and he told horror stories about corp middle managers getting on him because labor costs were up .012 last quarter. At one point they weren't stocking the pastries and bagels because "we don't make money on those, just the coffee." Tried to explain that I come in for both. No bagel, no coffee. Penny pinching has that chain in trouble.
and had probably been there for 30 years, since that building opened.
It closed in mid-March because of Covid-19, but we had been expecting it to eventually reopen. Instead, they sent e-mail to some of their customers this week saying it is permanently closed.
Is the "Au Bon Pain CHOICES" still around in Copley Place (even if closed for Covid)? I used to love that (lol) because it made the other ones seem like they gave you no choices. ;-) Surely they could have come up with a better name? ;-)
