Trump supporters figure out how to get to Fields Corner in time to be drowned out at Juneteenth celebration

A small group of Trump supporters protested at an event to commemorate the end of slavery today at Town Field Park in Fields Corner. They were drowned out and the Juneteenth speakers continued their speeches. One of the Trumpies was escorted away by police.

One person who was at the even reports what happened before the two-flag guy was led away:

That man was shouting at rally attendees, saying he would bet $1,000 that one of the attendees would kill him. He also called the rally racist. Between all of that and choosing to wear camo pants, I hope he gets the professional help he needs.

Protesting the end of slavery in our country, or celebration thereof. Classy.

Millions of republicans protest the end of slavery every day when they display their confederate flags. They hate non white people and love losing wars.

Maybe 10,000s on display.

They're not that common, that's what makes them noteworthy. You're much more likely to see stickers of Bass Pro Shops or Marines or Browning Buckmark or even NRA. Even in the rural South, they've really faded out. For rural non-South [from West Virginia to Washington to Vermont], they're not especially common either.

Counterprotesting amounts to trolling the people at a rally themselves, not those people's message. It's the same as the huge counterprotest on Boston Common two years ago at the 'rally for free speech'. Obviously the huge crowd of counterprotesters wasn't focused on the issue of free speech.

That rally was never about free speech. Surely you know that.

That wasn’t a counterprotest at all. It was a march in response to the violence in Charlottesville the previous week.

It was a lot easier to break it down into a march against free speech for all the white nationalists who attended and supported, as well as those who comment on universalhub years later.

protesting the end of slavery to own the libs

This was a celebration not a protest, dear.

Black people are allowed outside without your permission for more than first amendment exercises.

People can be not of the Democratic party, and also celebrate Juneteeth. Many of us did.

These things are not mutually exclusive.

up
Voting closed 0

Yes, absolutely. But based on the images, this certain group of folks set themselves up, physically separated, to spread a certain message. If they were supportive of the message of the ongoing celebration, they could have easily joined the main group.

Word of these morons showing their ass has made it outside of Boston.

We need the police to keep the peace.

between the hateful pro-cop screamers with the thin blue lines 'rally' last week in the Holy Name rotary and this group of people who think the end of slavery shouldn't be celebrated?

And you wonder why people don't trust the cops in this country?

regardless of what the protests may be about, is not a good time for so many people to be so close together, even when wearing masks and being outdoors. Moreover, in pictures of protests and all that I've seen, a number of people don't bother to wear masks, either, which is equally stupid, because, in either instance, no matter how good or how bad their causes are, the protestors are putting each other, themselves, and their friends, families and neighbors at risks, as well.

If it’s not a good time for protests and celebrating Juneteenth then it’s definitely not a good time to open beaches and encourage people to start to get back to normal life.

up
Voting closed 0

Yup, that's true. Assuming the beaches in question are small and popular enough to concentrate people near each other.

Who exactly are you arguing against? I missed the person who is in favor of open beaches but thinks protests and Juneteenth celebrations are too risky.

Oh you know who I’m arguing against there’s really no need to explain.

up

No I don't.

You replied to mplo's post saying protests are risky. You brought up opening beaches, but mplo's post didn't mention that, nor did any other comment on this page.

I'm a regular reader. But I'm not mind reader. So who are you arguing against?

up

I'm not saying that the beaches shouldn't be re-opened, but right now, It's still too soon to do so. There's an important difference here.

It’s a sacrifice a lot of people are willing to make to stand up for an urgent cause

At all of the larger BLM protests I've been to, I would say a conservative estimate of the mask-wearing rate would be 99%. They've had volunteers giving out masks if people needed them and going through the crowds giving out squirts of hand sanitizer every 15-20 minutes. Everyone has been very respectful of others, which makes sense given that the protests are in the spirit of making the government and its most disrespectful actors finally respect it's most abused citizens. Considering that the transmission rate would be cut by 80% only by everyone wearing masks (which far too many people are not bothering with), they are honestly some of the safest places I've felt in the last 3 months.

Contrast that with "blue lives matter" rallies where you can usually count the people wearing masks on one hand, or the police themselves at BLM protests, none of which I saw wearing masks. Didn't the one guy spit on a black man at the West Roxbury thing the other day? What could possibly be more of a deliberate sign of disrespect in the time of COVID-19?

all it takes is for a minority of people, no matter how small, to not be wearing masks, to put both themselves and others at risk for the Covid-19 virus.

up

We get it but all it takes is one racist cop to pull out his gun and it puts a black man at risk to be murdered.

Turns that being outside even with masks, even in protests, remains safer than being inside with others, especially when many folks inside the arena are not wearing masks.

I know this is after the fact, but it was more like fewer than 6,200 in attendance, per the Tulsa Fire Department.

It sounds like you've got your own experiences looking at pictures of protests, but I've been to multiple protests and have seen almost literally every single person wearing a mask. People who speak at protests frequently use the platform to ask people to be safe and implore them to get tested afterwards. Also the first protests were by far the largest, and those happened weeks ago, so we would be seeing a spike in cases by now if protests were actually a source of infection (our case counts have been steadily going down for some time now, and the protests have not made any noticeable change).

I attended this Juneteenth celebration and the moment I entered the park I was handed a bag with a free mask, bottle of hand sanitizer, and pamphlet about accessing free coronavirus testing, speakers talked about how and why the virus has disproportionately affected black and brown people. The protests that are happening are keenly aware that racism and coronavirus are public health issues that impact each other that must be taken equally seriously.

Trump flags and blue line flags at a racist rally. Shocking.

they're for FreeSpeech, what happened in Charlotesville, Resisting Marxism, and Straight Pride.

When they counter-celebrate the emancipation of slaves, they're for freedom for themselves and enslavement for African-Americans, a neo-confederate idea, which is digusting but the neo-confederate battle flag did not fly yesterday? Maybe even the far right is making adjustments..

And it's telling that the biggest later supporters of the un-American, fallen, traitorous and racist shitbag Confederacy wore hoods to hide their identity when taking midnight rides to terrorize men, women, and children.

I guess the only saving grace is that the racist scum today don't wear masks because they're proudly owning the libs on social media!

The slogan was MAGA and it took less than 4 years to prove the deal of American exceptionalism deader than the founding fathers.

If you consider the origins of Labor Day, you'd see it is a perfectly reasonable day to protest.

A combination of celebration, protest, and community get together. Even the angry Trumpsters really didn't bother anyone very much.

But when everyone went home and when the sun went down, Town Field transformed into the nightly war zone of fireworks. Friggin huge loud explosions all night from around 9PM to 4 in the morning. Almost 4 weeks running now. And BPD C11 is a half a block away.

Seriously WTF?

up
Voting closed 0

It's unreal that people can be allowed to set off fireworks from 9 p. m. until four o'clock in the morning. The city should really crack down on that--hard!

My takeaway on this that the counter douches aren't just protesting Emancipation, which is intolerable but that they're protesting the celebration of Emancipation.
A nuance I know but important to me.
As an abstract concept or some misguided ideal I can understand the douche reaction.
But a true protest against descendants of slaves celebrating their ancestors and kin being freed from from bondage?
Boggles my mind.
