There are now zero Unos in Boston
By adamg on Thu, 06/25/2020 - 2:41pm
Boston Restaurant Talk reports the Kenmore Square Uno, the last of its kind in all of Boston, has served its last deep dish. Fans of whatever the chain keeps trying to push now instead of deep dish will have to just head on down to the Dedham Mall now (even their corporate HQ has moved out of town - from West Roxbury to Norwood). The chain has been in financial trouble for years, long before Covid-19.

No tears
I'm sorry for the staff. There was some good people. But the location was dated and felt like walking into the 1990s. The food wasn't that good, the tables and menus were sticky, and the prices nothing special.
Hopefully something which isn't Ramen will take over the space although it will probably be kept vacant for years while the Buckminister is repurposed.
In the Kenmore Sq area it's now Unos, Eastern Standard and O'Leary's that are out.
Lower Depths is gone too
Lower Depths is gone too
Permenently?
I hope not. I really liked that joint and live just up the road in Allston :(
Sadly, yes
Closed about a year ago. https://www.universalhub.com/2019/kenmore-square-bar-shuts-down-tonight
Almost a year now?
Yep, there's a new place called THE KENMORE there now.
Exactly
We went there before a Sox game 2 years ago because it was the only place that didn't have a wait. The deep dish pizza I ordered came out of the kitchen way too quickly. It was cold on the inside.
Also, Adam's headline writer, who I assume is Adam, writes the best headlines.
Don't know
A buddy a few years introduced me to it as a great place to pre-game for a Sox game. It was always empty, and had cheapish (for Kenmore) beer before games. Never did order food, though.
Also it would be amazing for a good Ramen spot there. Can't really think of any others in the area.
There is a new one
Right in Kenmore Sq in Hotel Commonwealth. Above or near the Starbucks.
There's also a new Chinese (?) place a block up Comm Ave where Scozzi was. Not sure if they ever opened or are just waiting out the Pandemic.
?
I can't find it on Yelp or Google Maps. There is an Udon place, but that isn't Ramen, nor would I think a Chinese place would probably have Ramen (or at least Japanese style Ramen).
My mistake
Must be thinking of the new Udon place.
No, not unexpected
Not at all unexpected since the Buckminster Hotel itself has closed, and presumably the entire building will be redeveloped.
Believe it or not, this particular Uno's -- and a few others that used to be around town -- had an unusual specialty of selling lobster dinners to group tours (bus tours) that were visiting New England. Everything had to be prearranged well in advance, including the number of lobsters. But it seemed so unusual to send my groups to a Chicago-inspired pizza shop for a "New England lobster" dinner.
It was also challenging to get the bus close to the restaurant for dinner on a night when the Red Sox were playing at home.
Hard to make it without Sox or students
I love Uno's, so it's always sad to see one close. The confluence of COVID-related events was surely the death knell.
With regard to moving the Corporate Headquarters....are you sure they left West Roxbury? The last time I was by there it still seemed like Uno's was there. Mapquest (please don't laugh, it came up in a Google search) lists the Norwood location as "Uno Restaurant Training Facility".
Ad
I'm sure it's not a coincidence that the ad I'm seeing with this article is for a Chicago-style pizza vendor that ships nationwide.

The wonder of web marketing
My wife was shopping for bathing suits on a computer that I have used to login to Facebook. Suddenly, on all my computers, I'm getting bikini ads. (There's usually a silver lining.)
Yea sure she was Gary.....
sure she was....

Truly A Sad Day
RIP UNO. Just so U kNO, Boston won't be the same without U.
I imagine there's a man in Allston right now with great hair and a lion's beard that is terribly upset by this news. We'll need a new Breakfast of Champions now.
Uno's was actually pretty good...
... when its "chain" was limited to the original store in Chicago and a second one called Due's.
Definitely
I went to Due, but way back in 2008 or 10. Good food.
Doesn't Uno Due Go in
Doesn't Uno Due Go in DTX count, or did that close, too?
