Happy Valley not so happy; covidiots vent their rage at an ice-cream shop

Herrell's, in the bucolic city of Northampton (started by Steve Herrell, yes, that Steve, and his wife) reports several incidents in which people got so, so mad when they were told to put on a mask or to take their cone to go - one even threw the cone at the server when told they couldn't eat it inside.

Did anyone ever tell these shitheads NO! when they were children?

Seriously?

When did acting like a toddler become a political act and not an immature, deplorable antisocial one?

Are lead poisoning and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder that common in certain areas that this many people are incapable of basic adult behavior? That so many people simply can't be expected to exercise the most simple impulse control?

This is why we need social workers - these people need services to improve their behavior. Might mean they can hold a job someday, too.

I'm not sure what's going on in the time of covid, but normally the patrons of Herrell's tend to be of a social class where "lead poisoning and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder" would be a factor. They're faculty and faculty brats (and students, but none of those now), which is certainly not to say that they don't act out. Entitlement drives acting out more than your bugaboos.

The smart people stay home to avoid the stupid people, dear.

These are not likely the entitled professors.

Also? Lead poisoning affected everyone in an entire generation in Massachusetts and still does. That's because it was coming out of every tailpipe.

For heavens sake, if you don't like a private business enforcing the rules they consider necessary for safety (not to mention what the state government requires) then leave peacefully and go someplace else.

up
Voting closed 0

Why do they have "freedom" but the business owner doesn't have the same right to require whatever dress code they are fit. Did they at least have a shirt and shoes?

People don't vote Libertarian: Few people actually want to acknowledge the private property rights of others. These people wanted to sit in someone else's building/business and flout the safety guidelines. Same with the lady who threw the groceries out of her own cart when asked to wear a mask inside the supermarket.

Couple that with all the petty theft, and I can see where a vote for a party which promotes private property rights and doing no harm is against the interests of a lot of people.

That's not the reason.

Northampton makes JP look downright conservative politically speaking. I wouldn't think someone who was opposed to masks would ever consider going to that town.

Remember - Like the place where they think Brianne Wu has a good shot to defeat Steve Lynch in the primary, JP Sur-La-Connecticut is filled with busybody know it alls who are, in their own minds, smarter than you.

Ice cream is a fun business and like any business, nearly every customer is great. Karens and Chads of the world come in all classes in both liberal and conservative stripes, don't think because someone went to Mount Holyoke and settled in a Victorian on a side street near Smith that they are not customer service monsters either.

Too much to unpack between JP, Victorians and Mt Holyoke ...

Self entitled assholes who prefer to preach rather than practice inhabit both ends of the political spectrum.

Speaking of which, welcome.

The anti-mask crowd is the only ones out getting ice cream.

The mask wearing crowd is avoiding crowds like the plague that they are.

Self-selection factors matter in statistical analysis.

I was in Herrell's a couple of weeks ago. They've got social distancing measures, signs, hand sanitizer, all that good stuff, just like every sane business, and it was by no means crowded.

Things are a bit different in western Mass: instacart and peapod and similar services are not widely available, many towns have no restaurant delivery, and so most people have no choice but to go out. Going out to perform errands doesn't imply any particular attitude toward safety when it's a necessity.

Oh, the irony of Mr. Instant Expert (just add bullshit) calling anyone else a know it all as he spouts off on a community other than his own.

Dollar Store Dworkin is back on the warpath.

There is so much anger in your responses.

Stay away from other humans for a while. The world will be a better place. Thanks.

The toxic troll with the throbbing forehead veins and an endless store of vitriolic epithets is throwing stones from the shakiest of glass houses when he accuses others of anger. And "Dollar Store Dworkin", really? Catch up, Rip Van Winkel, you really are above it all and beside the point.

Having driven through there yesterday and witnessed a Blue Lives Matter/Trump 2020 rally with my own eyes, I feel confident in saying that there are plenty of conservatives in Northampton. So it does not shock me to hear that there's at least one anti-mask moron in town.

It's a relatively rural place, there are a lot of farms around, it's rich fertile Connecticut River Valley soil. So it's not just the five-college 'liberal elite'. Plus, Springfield (and Holyoke) are just down the road

How much do you know about Holyoke? Or the rural areas that surround Northampton?

up

Or Hatfield? Or Westhampton? Or Easthampton, the town that separates Northampton from Holyoke?

….and was there over Memorial Day Weekend and in October last year. However, according to some very, very angry person, I am an "Instant Expert" on Northampton.

Easthampton is great too. Don't tell anyone but Lloyd Cole lives there quietly, since few Americans know who he is, and pops into the British foods shop out behind Thorne's in Northampton from time to time.

PS - Don't ever venture off Route 5 into the center of Hatfield. It would suck if angry people saw it.

The guys who decided that they didn't like the rules about wearing masks when they entered the shop and were told they couldn't eat their cones inside the store acted like a couple of big babies! The fact that people can be so disgusting is what spoils things for the people who do comply with the rules of social distancing and wearing a mask.

Those guys should be arrested, tried in a court of law for and charged with assault, and spend some time in the slammer for what they did.

The Branch Covidians are way out of line but this shouldn’t be on the servers.
Forget FB posts. Seen this a few times now.
Support your workers.
Owners and managers should be there enforcing these rules during business hours.
Employees should say hang on and then get the owner or manager over.

The owner of a business is a human being. After 90 hours or so of work during a week, especially during a struggling time and being short handed, dont you think it's ok for the owner to go home and leave their store in the hands of competent managers and assistant managers? I'm in the store for most of these issues with customers.

The linked FB post made it seem like 2 servers were in the line of fire while no mention of management/ owners.

Glad you're being responsible.

This is at least the third FB post I've seen calling out the no-maskers on behalf of poorly treated employees but with no mention of management taking action.

If your managers are competent perhaps you need to change your procedures to protect your workers.

Perhaps the crew shouldn't engage the no-maskers at all. When they see one there action should be to go find a manager to handle it.

I've run crews before and I've done everything possible to keep them working safely.
And I've specifically told them to find me to handle issues outside there scope of work.

Hang in there.

Just FYI that no one from the area actually calls it the Happy Valley. It’s like no one from Boston calls it Beantown. No one calls it Noho either.

I've spent time at the 5 colleges and in the area for work and fun. I always thought Happy Valley was a sarcastic or slightly pejorative nick-name. Used by outsiders and residents when they are mocking themselves just a little bit.

Somehow, I read Herrell's and Northampton and thought of Bedford Farms in Bedford. It's just past the end of the Minuteman Bike Trail in Bedford and makes a great pit stop before turning around and biking back to Boston. The ice cream was incredibly good with lots of variations and the portions were huge. It was a little too sweet, but it's ice cream so who's arguing?

Anyways, I figured it out because Bedford Farms is only walk-up and doesn't have an inside to sit down in which made no sense with what Adam wrote.

So the moral of the story is check out Bedford Farms Ice Cream if you're ever in Bedford.

but the moral is well worth it!

I'm strongly pro-mask. But I also like to understand how the rules work, and question rules that are self-contradictory or physically impossible to follow.

You can't do the actual eating of ice cream with a mask on. So presumably you don't have to wear one when you're eating.

If you're allowed to get ice cream to go with no mask, presumably that means you don't need a mask to order, pay, and receive your ice cream.

So when exactly do you need a mask? Just when you're walking from the counter to your table (but not from the counter to the door)?

Are you allowed to?

I don't know what their rules are and I haven't been to the store in Northampton, but if you are allowed to order to go with no mask, I would assume that's an outside line as opposed to indoors which makes a difference.

I'm only guessing though. It is possible they're applying the rules poorly.

I looked at the original Facebook post. It seems Adam's description of "they were told to put on a mask or to take their cone to go" wasn't entirely accurate. In fact, everyone has to take their ice cream to go, and the man without a mask wasn't served at all. That makes a lot more sense.
