Bad crash at bad intersection in Roslindale sends motorcyclist to the hospital

A crash between a motorcycle and a car where Cummins and American Legion highways and Canterbury Street intersect left the motorcyclist with multiple, but not life-threatening, injuries shortly before 10 p.m.

Bad intersection, indeed
Here we have 5 roads converging, 4 of which are 4 lanes and 1 which is a narrow 2 lane road complicated by a fire station entrance and tricky left-turn signals which allow about 3/4 of a car to make a protected left turn before opening up to all.
Here's what I'd do: make Canterbury St. one way from Hyde Park Ave. to Cummins Hwy. Then configure the lights at Cummins & Hyde Park to protect a line of left turners from Cummins westbound to Hyde Park southbound.
Wow!
The Intersection in question sounds like an area that's really rife for bad crashes and crashes that result in fatalities, and that some sort of change is needed, overall.
Not quite
While it is a place conducive to crashes, most would happen at low speeds, making the odds of a fatality quite low.
As for solutions, I don’t agree with the one suggested above, as it merely moves the point of conflict, but since I cannot come up with one, it’s the best one here. The whole Cummins, Canterbury, Hyde Park triangle needs holistic improvements to aid traffic flow.
Aid traffic flow?
No.
It needs improvements to improve safety.
You think the two aren’t connected?
Drivers at this intersection get frustrated by it, which basically encourages bad behavior. Lights are blown because they’ve been waiting several cycles and don’t want to wait another. Unsafe left turns are made because the amount of time the arrow is on doesn’t allow for the left turning traffic to clear.
Honestly, as a pedestrian (and very occasional cyclist) I feel safer than when I’m driving.
Very thoughtful ideas
Very thoughtful ideas. Because there are roadways involved that are under state jurisdiction you might want to send your thoughts to Sen Wm Brownsberger, who has a special interest in transportation. He is very good at listening to ideas, and also very good at getting things done.
Highways?
American Legion is completely city-owned. It is a parkway, not a highway. I think Cummins is partially city-owned. It is also not a highway. Misnaming them has resulted in incorrect street and intersection design and dangerous driving. The names need to be changed, and the streets need to be made safer and more pleasant for all modes of transportation.

Seems like a good place for a roundabout. When more than two streets come together, a roundabout can be a very safe and efficient solution rather than a complex multi-lane signalized intersection.
