Somebody went to some lengths - and heights - to put up a climate-justice banner over Kenmore Square

Citgo sign now a Climate Justice sign

Update: Ten charged.

TJ Connelly got a photo of the Citgo Sign refinished as the Climate Change Sign this evening. Unfortunately for them, they forgot to put holes in the banner to account for the wind, so ...

I don't think it's too hard to get up there. I remember back in the 80s Dave Barton of the Outlets posed up there for some local music publication.

Probably shouldn't reveal this on a public forum, but about 20 years ago I decided to try to get treatment for severe acrophobia, fear of heights, through the Boston University Center for Anxiety. After a few sessions the doctor took me up to the roof, in an attempt, after a few sessions to get me to stand near the edge, it is a flat roof with nothing at the edges, the door locks, so he got a piece of wood to prop it open.

The theory behind it is exposure to the fear alleviates the fear, the same for fear of flying. Usually after a few flights the person with a fear of flying normalizes the experience.

After two sessions on the roof, I told the doctor I had had it, so he said, well stay up here as long as you like then come in. With the pressure off, I took a look behind me and saw the Citgo sign...all that time I had not realized the Citgo sign was on top of that roof.

If the building is open, anyone can get up there...better hope you have your cell phone with you if that door to the roof shuts.

My friend and I went to visit a professor in that building. Rather than wait for the elevator, we took the stairs down like we did in every other building on campus.

WELL it turns out in that building, they are fire only stairs and the doors do not open from inside the stairwell. If that door shuts behind you, forget it, you're locked in there.

We walked all the way down, trying all of the doors at each floor, with increasing panic as none of them opened or even had a doorknob, wondering if we'd have to call BUPD to let us out, when we got to the ground floor and ended up in a maintenance room that was thankfully unlocked, and we were finally free!

So I strongly, strongly recommend staying out of the stairs in that building.

that would certainly be something worth calling ISD about. :-)

(And/or the fire marshal, I suppose.)

Times change, 20 years a lot has changed. I think back to the difference even between 1998 and 2002 and so much shifted post 911. In the past twenty years we have also seen an explosion of liability claims and payouts.

Quite often when you can't do something I bet if you dig an inch into the soil you will find liability concerns at the root.

Considering he later became a pretty good real estate broker (and a good guy), he knows what he was doing.

Of the environmental folks not understanding wind? :-)

Luckily it didn't blow totally off, fall on a moving car, and cause an accident.

Because Lord knows drivers in this town don't need any help

Yeah, cars sometimes crash, so if YOU cause an additional crash, don't worry about it.

I hope you move out of that basement before it floods. Millions of housing units in MA are in known flood plains and surge zones.

2020 is running quite hot, and its eight down and eight to twenty to go.

Their name is Extinction Rebellion. They've been bigger in the UK/EU than here so far.

Apparently they are not fans of wind energy. Must be strictly solar folks.

Love the irony of this sign placed on a city that will be underwater soon enough from global warming

up

Umm... isn't that the point of hanging a sign like that? Calling attention to how it will affect us?

I suspect the OP was referring to the CITGO sign itself, not the protest sign.

Nothing new, that.

Their sense of exceptionalism provides insurmountable armor against reality.

Until it bites them in the ass.

If Sandy hit on a high tide instead of a low tide the Back Bay would be literally eponymous.

Only early August and we are up to eight named storms, and two have come north. Predictions are for 24 named storms. If this pattern holds, then we may get some serious cyclone action this year. Lets hope it burns out before the Nor'Easters get a piece of this action.

Between the nightly riots in Portland, the looters in Chicago, the bike rally in Sturgis now this. I for one don't miss professional sports when I can watch real gladiators in action on the nightly news. Instead of the National Anthem they play We're on the Eve of Destruction.
