After the incident with the pea, the princess moved out - but took the mattresses with her

A lot of mattresses on one car in Brookline

Travel New England spotted this pile crossing the Beacon Street trolley tracks at St. Paul Street today.

I had the opportunity to tell the story of the Princess and the Pea to a friend who grew up in another country and did not know the story. His questions were: (1.) why was it considered a sign of a true princess to complain about the pea under the mattresses? and (2.) while were are on this topic, why was it okay for Goldilocks to break into the bears' house and then complain about everything? and (3.) was the princess related to Goldilocks?

Neither of the tales cited originated in the United States. The Goldilocks story, at least, was first told in the English language, but in England, apparently first written down by Robert Southey in 1837. The Princess's tale [did I get the apostrophe correct?] is from Denmark, first published by Hans Christian Andersen in 1835.

So you shouldn't have to be American to understand either one.

Agreed.... but not every culture worldwide has these stories. I'm curious how many people know the story of the princess and pea.

Fairy tales are folk tales collected by folklorists and are essentially authorless (Brothers Grimm, Uncle Remus, et cet.). Hans Christian Andersen wrote stories, so like Oz and Narnia and other fantastic tales for children, are not fairy tales.

I never thought Goldilocks' behavior was ok. Do most people?

But I agree. The bears got a bad rap.

Two questions. How did they manage to pile them up on the car and how will they get them off?
