Shutting down the expressway or any highway with fast moving
By mplo

Shutting down the Southeast Expressway, or any other highway with fast-moving vehicular traffic on it is especially way beyond the height of stupidity. At those high speeds, it's especially difficult to slow down, let alone stop, and further increases the chances of serious injuries and/or deaths.
It's not like the police cruisers suddenly come
By roadman
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 9:44am
to a screeching halt, or large barriers magically appear in the middle of the road (as happened with the protesters). They use a procedure called a rolling roadblock to slow down the traffic in a controlled manner so it eventually comes to a stop.
And, as the 'convoy" they're escorting to continually moving, unlike when they use a rolling roadblock to highway work, the delay to traffic is minimal.
The point is, however,
By mplo
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 10:06am
that the Southeast Expressway is extremely tense anyhow, and shutting down traffic on it, for protesting, or whatever, just makes an already nightmarish situation a hell of a lot worse.
I'll also add that, since there are times when I've had absolutely no choice but to drive on the Southeast Expressway. Even at "off" hours, traffic has been slowed down rather horrendously due to accidents, construction, or whatever. Protestors who insist on blocking such freeways, however, tend to make already-horrific situations worse.

When was the last time you actually had to commute to a job?
I drove in with my husband and neighbors the day of the BLM protests. Heading southbound into the city was actually within the bounds of the usual mayhem, and we honestly didn't even notice anything out of the ordinary.
Removing the exclusion on the carpool lane has done vastly worse mayhem to traffic than any single protest or accident ever did.
And this morning? Traffic is still well off of the pre-pandemic peak on most roads. Not as clear as in May, but many office bots are still at home until at least January.
You're missing the point, SwirlyBabe!
By mplo
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 11:05am
I work at home, but you know what? I've had to drive on the Southeast Expressway to get my car serviced by the dealer who I purchased my car from a bit over seven years ago, to go to Yale Supply and Lighting down in Dorchester to buy new needed supplies, and I periodically go down to Bird & Reptile Connection, where I purchased my pet Congo African Grey parrot, in order to purchase supplies, and to board her when I'm going away on long trips, or even overnight trips, and to have her flight feathers and nails clipped.
Having said all of the above, I've got no other option but to take the Southeast Expressway when I go to all those places, so don't go telling me that it doesn't count, don't try to undermine or underestimate me, and don't get feeling too snotty or virtuous. I worked at a job for sixteen years, which got outsourced, plus I had a supervisor who was just about as much of an asshole as you are.

By mplo
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 11:26am
I don't have free money. I trust the mechanics who work at the dealership where I purchased my car more than I'd trust a lot of these independent gas stations/mechanics. Anyway, what the fuck do YOU care who I go to to get my car serviced?
I am not kidding
By Matt
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 11:36am
I’ve done pretty much everything on a car except rebuild an engine and swap out a transmission. You can do no worse than the dealership. They are mostly dishonest.
Very few independent shops are dishonest. Their name is on the building, they have pride in their work. I’ve never been ripped off by an independent shop. The dealership has recommended work that didn’t need to be done several times.

I took my Durango for a recall to the dealer in Medford and they tried to recommend I replace my timing belt. I had to ask them how exactly they would accomplish such a task since my vehicle doesn't have one. They had to think on that one.
They then tried to charge me $1000 for recall work and wouldn't call FCA to to get it covered so I had to do that and make FCA call them and tell the dealer to cut the crap. So dealers I've dealt with are shady.
A lot of dealers are somewhat shady, although
By mplo

some are shadier than others. The same thing goes for the majority of Insurance companies. I once got another car of mine serviced at a branch of the long-since defunct Monroe's repair shops, due to a brake problem. Not only did they charge me much too much (over five hundred dollars), but they put in a some re-built brake calibers, to boot. When I talked to a Toyota dealer service person about it, and described what happened, the service person told me that Monroe's shop had totally rooked me and charged too much, and that replacing the break calipers, especially with rebuilt ones, was absolutely wrong, and unnecessary, and that if I'd come there, all that would've been needed was to lubricate the calipers that were already in there.
A few years afterwards, I ended up getting my first new car. I've been driving Honda Civid 4-door sedans since, which I love.
So what? I had an independent

So what? I had an independent shop charge me for changing the PCV valve when my car didn't have one. Therefore should I conclude that all independent shops are shady?
Okay, so you know about how to repair cars?
By mplo
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 6:41pm
That's all very well. Not everybody does, however, and I'm admittedly among the ones who don't know about how to repair cars.
I've had at least a couple of instances when i've been rear-ended, while stopped at a STOP sign or a red light, and, in both instances, I've used Tech Auto Body, on New Street, in Cambridge, to get the damage repaired. They've done a fabulous job.

both to and from school, and to various jobs, both from suburban Lincoln, Ma, and in the city, for a good number of years, so don't get feeling too snotty, or virtuous like you always do. I'll also add that one of the reasons I moved from the idyllic suburbs to the city is precisely because commuting such long distances, and having to battle rush hour traffic became such a headache for me.
You may think you're hot stuff, but I find you totally arrogant, nasty, and intolerant of anybody who doesn't think the way you do. Public transportation around here has never been that great, either.
I'll also add, SwirlyGrrl, that the Southeast Expressway is the absolute worst route here in Boston. Not only is it rush-hour 24/7 on that highway, but it's got a lot of the most aggressive drivers, to boot.

I’d like to hire a detail to stop traffic and slow down everyone else’s commute so I can get to work easier but I can’t. Just because they can, and get away with it doesn’t mean they should. They should leave earlier just like everyone else or fly at off times.

“The escort of the Patriots’ buses is a regular, longstanding detail paid for by the team to ensure secure transit to the airport, similar to any other paid detail escort for motorcades or specialized material transports,” Dave Procopio, a state police spokesman, told Boston.com in statement. “Because we make every effort to minimize disruption to motorists, today’s escort necessitated a lane closure that lasted only approximately three minutes.”

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, that was one of the arguments with the protests.
Well, you know what, though?
By mplo
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 9:54am
This, imho:
is a perfectly legitimate argument.
It used to be that:
A) Protestors did not shut down highways with fast moving traffic on them.
B) The people who organized such protests would make the protestors move aside in order to let ambulances and other emergency vehicles through. When a seriously ill or injured person is being transported to the hospital, time really is of the essence. Every second of every minute of every hour really does count. The fact that nowadays ambulances are often forced to take a longer route to a hospital can and often does have rather devastating affects. Frankly, I think that before totally shutting down traffic, especially at rush-hour, people really should consider that there are people needing to get to important medical appointments, or get their pets to the animal hospital on an emergency basis, or to get to work on time so they won't lose their job.

By berkleealum
Mon, 10/05/2020 - 10:06am
this is true - in one case, the highway was shut by normal people seeking to amplify a righteous message
in the other, the state shut the highway because some sports guys had to get to the airport since their game was postponed on account of their star qb contracting an incredibly contagious illness

I don't have a lot of sympathy for "normal" people totally shutting down traffic, especially at rush-hour and/or on a freeway, just to amplify and emphasize a righteous message.
Secondly, shutting down the Expressway because some sportsmen had to get to the airport was a stupid move, as well. Why couldn't they have been airlifted to the airport? They should've been.
