ICE now confirms its agents stopped a Black jogger in West Roxbury
WBUR reports that after first playing the neither confirm nor deny game, ICE in Boston today acknowledged that it was three of its agents who stopped Bena Apreala, a lifelong Boston resident, as he jogged on VFW Parkway.
They did so only after US Rep. Ayanna Pressley demanded an investigation:
For too long, ICE and CBP have acted with impunity—emboldened by a xenophobic Administration and the Occupant of this White House.
We will not stand by and watch them intimidate, harass and racially profile our Black and Brown communities in Boston or anywhere in the country.
One of the two vehicles from which the three ICE agents jumped on the parkway was the same sort of dark-gray Dodge SUV from which ICE agents released a man in Lynn over the weekend after neighbors and activists surrounded the vehicle.
At-large City Councilor Michael Flaherty, a former assistant district attorney, says:
ICE does not get to stop someone w/o just cause and a warrant in Boston or anywhere. This stop was unlawful, outrageous & inexcusable. I am committed to working w/ partners in gov't & community to ensure this is acknowledged & never happens again.

So, what was their reason
for refusing to confirm it before? I can't really think of a good reason other than "intimidation", to be honest.
(undercover or investigation doesn't really cut it when the dudes are wearing tactical vests and identifying themselves as ICE agents when asked)
Maybe we'll find out ...
In Rep. Pressley's hearing.
Ha!
She's only around when it benefits her, never when there are nighty murders in her district. Phoney with a capital P!
Oh?
Is this something that you believe a member of Congress should be hands-on responsible for, thereby interfering with local authorities?
Surprise and Fear!
Their reason is surprise and fear!
Is there a way to stop paying for amateur hour fascism games like this? Other than moving to Canada?
Surprise and Fear
Yeah, there's a way, and we all know what that is: VOTE!!!
...And an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope
Oh wait, that's the Spanish Inquisition.
Pappa Francis to Pastor Mike
Pappa told Pence to piss off.
Canada...
...won't have you, or any of us, and why would they? It's our mess, we can sit and rot in it or we can clean it up.
I don't think they have a
I don't think they have a reason other than to just piss everyone off.
I’m curious to know their
I’m curious to know their reason as well. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think those guys were official ICE agents. Knowing that they are is extremely concerning. Did they leave Ben alone because he started recording? How did they determine his citizenship during that interaction? Do black and brown people need to carry their passports and birth certificates every time they leave the house? Or does ICE plan on giving them some sort of identifying mark (e.g. star) that must be worn on their clothing? Will the black and brown people have to leave their homes and only be allowed to live in a certain section of Boston? #firsttheycame...
Abolish ICE already.
Abolish ICE already.
...and replace it with what
...and replace it with what specifically?
How about nothing?
Unless you feel there is a need for armed vigilantes to patrol streets of West Roxbury harassing Black people.
Last time I checked, the only borders near Westie were Needham and Dedham.
And yet, even far though it's
And yet, even far though it's distant from the border, Boston has a large population of foreign nationals with illegal presence. If local government won't enforce the law, then that responsibility falls on federal law enforcement, which is ICE.
That said, it doesn't make sense for anyone (ICE, local PD, neighborhood watch, cub scouts) to randomly interrogate people jogging through a park. Someone definitely wasn't following procedure, and should be investigated for it.
Your "foreign nationals with
Your "foreign nationals with an illegal presence" are fine. They do nothing but work like 16 hours a day 7 days a week after spending tens of thousands of dollars and risking their lives to get here.
Leave them alone.
If the enforcement of laws
If the enforcement of laws that you are so fond of result in a fascist dystopian nightmare, maybe the problem is the law itself and not the particulars of enforcement.
Mission Creep
This here is some extreme mission creep.
Let alone the idea that state forces can just stop and harass people or invade homes and arrest people without a proper warrant.
ICE freezes up to 100 miles from a border
ICE is given permission to operate with contempt for state laws anywhere that is within 100 miles of a border. Boston is under ICE jurisdiction.
So much for state's rights.
And Chestnut Hill...
...and Chestnut is a brownish color, so we all know why they were worried about border crossings.
Armed vigilantes?
They're federal police. Get a grip.
They're acting outside their portfolio
That sounds like vigilantes to me.
Don't replace it with anything.
Before ICE, we already had Customs, we already had the INS, and we already had Federal Protective Services. ICE was never necessary in the first place.
I wonder why they reorganized things
It's like suddenly in the early 2000s they decided that they needed a different way to handle border and customs issues, that perhaps issues with the previous system came up. I wonder why?
Fascism
The authoritarian thugs seized 9-11 as an excuse to create new police agencies with less congressional oversight. You didn't notice? It was in all the papers.
Interesting
I recall seeing something in the papers about the INS missing the fact that 19 guys had overstayed their student visas and were studying flying but were uninterested in landing planes. Perhaps if there were an agency that looked in to enforcing immigration laws like that, who knows what might have happened.
That's the way you remember it?
I remember it being the FBI that dropped the ball WRT those guys.
ICE is a new thing
It didn't exist before 2003.
It doesn't need to exist now.
This is how we do
"was the same sort of dark-gray Dodge SUV from which ICE agents released a man in Lynn over the weekend after neighbors and activists surrounded the vehicle"
This is how we act if we want to be allies.
ICE now confirms its agents stopped a Black jogger in West Roxbu
I am disgusted that these little ICE men feel they can do this anywhere in this country, never mind in our town, and we have to do everything to stop such fascist tactics. Can't wait until after the election and cockroaches like them get chased back into their dark holes.
On the other hand, I was afraid it was some local a-hole yahoos -- I'm so very glad I was wrong.
White guy here
For all the people who make excuses when minorities are hassled/arrested/killed by the authorities ('Oh they were breaking the law") this guy is a classic example of what too many people deal with every day. If you can't go for a jog on the VFW parkway without the Feds giving you shit, there is a real problem with our system of law enforcement.
Loser Rambo Wannabes
with guns
Does ICE have a fitness for duty requirement?
Asking for the Pillsbury Doughboy.
They're scraping the bottom of the barrel
The truth is, the people who want those jobs are not the best people in any sense of the word.
What was in the barrel
is now in their stomachs.
