This is the 3rd crash of a car into a building recently in Southie. The common denominator is dangerous roadway design. All of these crashes occurred on 4 lane roadways (2 lanes in each direction.) We know this configuration is dangerous, for a whole host of reasons.
- Multiple lanes in each direction invite speeding.
- Left turns from the roadway "block" the left lane while having to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic, causing drivers behind the turning car to weave and change lanes.
- Turning left onto the roadway, drivers must cross two lanes of traffic.
- You cannot have protected left turn phases because there are no left turn only lanes.
Advocates have been pushing for bus lanes or a road diet on Broadway for years, yet the City has taken no action. We also need a road diet on the other 4 lane streets (L St, Dorchester St, etc.) These streets should be converted to 2-3 lanes plus bike lanes.
Broadway is the double parking capital of America. My car was once triple parked in by E Street.
If there are two lanes available for more than 200 linear feet congratulate yourself, you are driving at 430 in the morning.
If any roadway in South Boston needs redesign it is Dorchester Street near the cemetery. That is really the only place in South Boston proper (Not Day Blvd or Summer Street by the Channel) where people give it a little gas.
The four lanes on Broadway and Dorchester Street is a legacy of the street cars which used too and should again move up and down those ways.
"The road design can't possibly be contributing to people driving dangerously here, because it's actually contributing to too many people parking illegally!"
This...may be less of a persuasive argument against a redesign than you think.
Except this is located mid block where there is no where to/no need to turn so.....It was probably some fossil who hit the gas instead of the brake when attempting to parallel park
I take it you've never seen someone pull a crazy ivan in the middle of a block in southie. It happens every 30 seconds on broadway, especially east broadway near the S&S and west broadway in front of the CVS. Just constant.
Anyone who has lived here knows all too well the dangers drivers pose.
How many of us throw our hands up at;
Drivers who don’t stop for people in crosswalk
Drivers who blow through stop signs.
Drivers who speed on narrow congested streets
Drivers who fly in/out of rotaries like their hair is on fire.
Yell/scream, flip is off
It’s constant, ridiculous, and completely spoils the awesome vibe Southie has.
I would love to blame it on the young kids but it’s all ages, genders, and ethnicities

Wow, great analysis,
Wow, great analysis, unfortunately it's not relevant to these crashes.
Orrrr
Just learn how to drive!
If you're an insurance company...
you've gotta understand, cars are going to hit you.
(but at least you'll probably have insurance for it, unlike many vulnerable pedestrians)
Wait for it - - - this never
Wait for it - - - this never would have happened in Old Southie.
Do your homework Dick Tracy
How many of these Evil Knievals are from Southie. And why doesn’t the media publicize it? Censorship is alive and well in 2020.
Two more by Sunday.
