Citizen complaint of the day: You'd think a luxury apartment building could think of a better way of advertising than defacing the Commonwealth Avenue Mall

Stenciled ad for 28 Exeter

Update: Building owner apologizes, sends crew out to wash the ads away.

Way to make an impression with the neighbors: Several disgusted citizens filed 311 complaints today about the gauche way 28 Exeter at Newbury advertised it has flats to rent - by spraying stenciled ads on the sidewalk of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. The building went up in 1979, so you'd think the owners would know how their ads would be received in the Back Bay.

Wow. And I thought it was annoying when buildings along the Common used lights to project images onto the sidewalk.

What’s the maximum penalty for graffiti? How about a zoning violation while we’re at it?

staring at the ground, you'll miss it.

Besides, it's temporary paint.

Besides, it's temporary paint.

The company in question helped themselves, temporarily, to something that wasn't theirs to take.

Someone who, without your permission, takes your car from your driveway, drives it around for the afternoon, and then returns it, should be let off, because the theft was only temporary?

Dude , really ? It’s a Square foot of sidewalk.

And how much is a square foot worth in the Back Bay?

So it’s petty theft, not grand theft....

What astounds me here is that a rich landlord has just helped himself to something of yours —- admittedly a very small something, maybe no more loss of value to you than, say, someone walking by your table while you’re eating at a restaurant and taking a swig of your cocktail — and commenters on here are rushing to defend the landlord and saying that the people complaining about it are unreasonable.

If you’re gonna pick sides, why on Earth pick the one that is arguing that corporate interests ought to be allowed to help themselves to public property? What’s in that for you?

A square foot of land on Comm Ave is worth way more than $250.

I wonder if it's spray paint, or if they used spray chalk. The latter at least is not a permanent marking.

It’s definitely spray chalk. I hope everyone found their monocles

So graffiti is ok if it only lasts until the next rain?

How would this building feel if someone wrote with chalk all over their front entrance?

Playing with chalk in the park is for children, not for advertising execs and millionaire developers.

Maybe it was children ?

Yes, maybe the landlords hired children to deface public property
