Don't you hate it when you get stuck in a rotary? Leverett Circle indecision proves costly for two alleged Stoneham desperadoes trying to flee police

State Police report arresting two men wanted in Stoneham for shoe shoplifting and dragging a police officer with their car, after they couldn't decide where to go when they got into Leverett Circle this morning.

According to State Police, a trooper on patrol spotted the gray Kia Optima linked to the Stoneham incidents coming off I-93 southbound into Leverett Circle around 11 a.m.

The Kia circled Leverett Circle several times and then passed the Museum of Science on Charles River Dam Road (Route 28), traveling on the wrong side of the road.

The trooper called off his pursuit to avoid crashes, but the driver didn't leave the area, State Police report:

A short time later Trooper Devon Surian, who was working a paid detail, observed the suspect vehicle traveling on Nashua Street. Trooper Surian followed the Kia onto Beverly Street, a dead-end that runs behind the State Police Marine Unit headquarters. The Kia became disabled after striking a curb. Two male occupants fled the vehicle on foot.

Trooper Surian apprehended the male suspect nearby. A Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff then took temporary custody of the suspect while Trooper Surian continued to pursue the second suspect on foot while radioing her description and route of flight. Troopers from Troop A and Troop H located the second suspect on Harvard Place in Charlestown, a street near Rutherford Avenue.

Marquise Henry, 37, of Dorchester and James Rogers, 39, of Mashpee were handed over to Stoneham Police for booking on the robbery and attempt to run down a police officer and will face additional charges for their alleged driving violations in and near Leverett Circle, State Police say.

Stoneham Police report charging Henry, the driver, with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and marked lanes violations. Rogers was charged with shoplifting.

According to Stonhem Police, Rogers stole several pairs of shoes and other items from Famous Footwear, 99 Main St., then got into a car driven by Henry.

The vehicle, allegedly driven by Henry, fled south on Main Street towards Montvale Avenue. Two Stoneham Police officers working detail on Montvale Avenue attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle allegedly struck and dragged one of the officers a short distance down the street. The officer was not seriously injured.

Innocent, etc.

How do people from Cape Cod / Dot even end up in Stoneham, never mind deciding to rob a bank there? To me this is more important than their poor rotarial navigation. :-)

I've updated the post: One of them shoplifted some shoes.

They drive a car. By the standards of much of this continent, 16 miles Dot to Stoneham and 75 miles Mashpee to Stoneham ain't no thang.

Even though it's still called Leverett Circle, it's no longer possible to circle it. Even if you didn't mind going the wrong way, you'd probably get stuck with oncoming traffic here: https://goo.gl/maps/WPZ8u8JRXxFASYuW7

The only way to circle around is to go all the way down Martha Road past that lone surviving West End tenement.

They'd have to have used a Dunkin' box truck and storrowed it before getting caught.

This is pure comedy gold, a Mack Sennet classic. They get stuck on a rotary, cross the Charles River Dam on the wrong side of the street, and still manage to end up back in Boston, on a dead end behind a police station.

The Kia as a getaway car for shoelifters was presumably a second choice, when a 1915 Model T could not be found.

Could have been a Nissan Rogue.
