Update: Belichick read the room.
US Rep Jim McGovern of Worcester says the Patriots coach should just say no.
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) says it would be ‘disgraceful’ for New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick to accept the Medal of Freedom from President Trump after last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol pic.twitter.com/QteyLULfjq

How has it even gotten this far?

I would expect the son of the former Naval Academy head coach (and himself an assistant there) and a man who narrated a World War II documentary to reject out of hand an honor offered by Donald Trump.
And it's not even the bone spurs, because I won't begrudge anyone for not wanting to fight in Vietnam, but, you know, the whole "losers and suckers" bit. Bill would be wise to wait out the end of his term, collect the award from Biden if it's still on offer, show up in his suit and tie, laugh good-naturedly as senile 46 makes a crack about the Philly Special, and move on with his image intact.

what the use of the word is based on here? i’m not a big fan of armchair psychology.
i’ll save anyone who’s interested the trouble — and hopefully none of you is interested — of searching my post history: i haven’t used that word to describe the current president.

Take the lead on this: Joe Biden voted yes on war with Iraq and hands money to banks.

Not only voted yes, but continued to support it long after it was clear that the WMDs were a lie.
With regards to your second point, he used to be referred to as the senator from MBNA, because he was so far in the pocket of the credit card companies.
Not to mention the 94 crime bill, endless fight to slash social security and Medicare, opposition to busing, opposition to the Hyde amendment, buddy buddy relationship with segregationists, and credible rape accusation.
Trump is obviously horrible, but anybody who thinks Biden will be some sort of savior is in for a rude awakening.
Sure, object on any grounds you like that are honest.

But meanwhile, stop with that hateful Trumpian bullshit about Biden's mental capacity. It doesn't stand up to two minutes of watching him answer questions to reporters in real time.

Objection!
On what grounds?
Hearsay, your Honor!
Opposing counsel is attempting to discredit my client by alleging inferior performance in a routine task well within the parameters of his job (to whit, answering real-time questions from reporters for two minutes) while failing to establish that my client EVER performed that task!
Opposing counsel?
He's got me there, your honor.

A great many people objected to fighting in Vietnam without committing fraud. The Vietnam war is an important documented example of how class and race divides and restrains advancement in our country. It is reasonable and right to expect that the people privileged with choices about how they would serve our country be held responsible for those choices by voters. Trump was never at risk to be sent to Vietnam. He was more at risk of being drummed out of officer training because he cannot pay attention, follow instructions or work on a team. His history at military school would be sufficient evidence of that. His risk at entering the military would have been humiliation, not danger.

I'm confused. You keep spelling it Belichik. Surely it's spelled Belichick, as I've seen everywhere else. And even in the tag below the post that's how it's spelled. Is the misspelling intentional as a joke that I'm not getting?

Magoo was trying to think of something to say. A Magooism if you will. But Magoo can’t seem to think of any Magooisms at the moment. What is Magoo’s world coming to such that Magoo has nothing to say. Magoo has been working quite a bit lately so maybe Magoo just needs to rest Magoo’s noggin. Ah, that’s it Magoo will have a good night sleep and cuddle with Mrs. Magoo and all will be well in the morning. Magoo.

The bigger problem
By Jizmo
Mon, 01/11/2021 - 7:27pm
Bill Belichick is a great coach, obviously, and a future Hall of Famer, but the bigger problem I have it the choice of people Trump bestows the highest civilian honor upon.
When you consider that past recipients of that prestigious award have been Rosa Parks, MLK, Jr. among them, they are people who's lives made a difference in all of our lives.
Trump gives the award to "personalities." The guy is insane and unfit to be in any public service.
As insane as Obama

Obama gave it to Oprah, James Taylor, Yogi Berra, Barbara Streisand and Gloria Estefan. I guess they were all equal to Rosa Parks in your mind.

Not my circus, not my monkeys. Just tit for tat.
His argument (if you can read) is that Trump is unique in giving the award to personalities. I simply pointed out a few. So did you. Thank you for assisting my response. Well played.

So I could've done more due diligence by researching who past recipients of that award includes. But I stand by my distain of Trump, especially after hearing a little while back that he honored Rush Limbaugh with that award.
Bill Belichick is a great coach. And even as much as I respect his record and championships he has brought to NE, personally I don't feel that being an athlete or any other "personality" should qualify for the most prestigious honor any civilian can have.
And that goes for all of the selections from every former president.
Now, if a future president wishes to bestow that great honor posthumously on the great composer Frank Zappa...

All of the Obama nominees had extensive philanthropic enterprises (yes, even Yogi). While Kraft certainly has a huge charitable foundation, I don't think that Belichick, or many of the trump nominees have such a background. That said, perhaps it is time to remember the purpose of the medal - "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."
Trump made it personal

By giving the award to Limbaugh, Jordan, and Nunez, Trump made it personal. These people did nothing to make us a better country, they were simply loyal to Trump and helped further his nonsense. At least the people you point out are American institutions in some fashion.

One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions."
Less ambiguous. Good enough. Bottom line: he said, "Fuck you" to the Medal, which puts him in very rare company. Trump won't miss the point.

on a wealthy white trump supporter suddenly finding jesus because of last week.
i agree that the passive voice is doing a ton of heavy lifting here. what does "the decision has been made not to move forward" even mean here? who made the decision? has anyone ever used the phrase "move forward" with regard to receiving an award? it's hard for me to read it any other way but a PR dance designed to avoid explicitly declining the award.
i mean, be honest:
this is meaningless drivel. what actions have the patriots taken as a result of conversations about social justice? they drafted a kid with a nazi tattoo just last year lol. maybe he's talking about signing cam newton?

Not sure how that overcomes the use of the passive voice.
A strong "I have decided to decline the award of this medal" eliminates any hint of equivocation and takes direct responsibility for the decision.
