The names of my two dogs are on the list. Bailey, is an 75 lb AmStaff and a cuddlebug and Lily, is a Basset Hound mix of some kind. I did not name either of them.

I wonder how many of these are shelter names that stuck. Shelters recycle names, so it is a possible influence on this list.

I wonder how many of the names on this list overlap with trendy human names.
New Sociology of Dogs
By anon

This list of almost entirely human names is further proof of the relatively new phenomenon of people intensely and unnaturally humanizing their dogs and considering them "children", taking them everywhere including supermarkets, stores, banks, etc. Dogs remain great little creatures but many dog owners have become really bizarre and differ from owners of years past. I wonder about the causes of this.

Would you breed a human into trash-ass American society? The dog fills the void without inflicting 21st century American life onto a person who didn’t ask for it.
"relatively new phenomenon"? Not really.

Yeah, I'm going to go with "no" on this being "relatively new". People have been giving their pets "human" names for an incredibly long time. Heck, Boston's own John Adams had a dog named Mark.
I'd also love to see some kind of citation about pet owner behavior actually changing that much. How much of this is just "because of the Internet etc it's a lot easier to see other peoples' behavior"?

You actually expect references and citations here instead of unsupported bullshit? For all we know, you are a dog that has been unnaturally humanized and now uses a computer.

jumped out at me as an oddity, especially at #1. Might have something to do with TikTok fame. Some children's books with that name, and a Harry Potter connection, too.

My actual name is in that list. Thankfully it's not as popular for dogs as it was once, because I would be walking down the street and hear somebody shouting my name and wonder why a stranger wanted my attention so urgently. I did learn to ignore it after a while.

The dog I grew up with really was named Fido. My father had always wanted a dog named Fido, and when people would ask him why, because it was such a cliche, he'd ask if they'd ever met another one. Nobody ever had. (Fido was the best damn dog in the entire universe, though. Except for all the other ones.)

Growing up, there was a basset hound who roamed our neighborhood (this was in the 80s when the leash laws were lightly or selectively enforced by our town's animal control officer) named Magoo. Magoo was friends with the Dudley the Newfie who lived next door to him and our yellow Labrador/German shepherd mix Brandy. Magoo, Dudley, and Brandy would roam and wander the backyards and nearby conservation areas of our suburb as if on rounds to greet everyone. They were all friendly and good natured dogs and everyone knew them and watched out for them, so every time I see the name Magoo, I think of this basset hound and his pack of neighborhood dogs (though I think Brandy was the alpha).

My cat is named Big Shirley
By Neal
Tue, 03/09/2021 - 12:07am
I've always thought that cats should have unique names. When I adopted her on Halloween of 2018, her shelter name was Willow (I got her at the ARL's shelter on Chandler St, but, per her bio, she had just been moved there from a Scituate shelter where the couple who had her before me had a baby who developed an allergy to her left her). I though that name was too common, so I renamed her Big Shirley after a gentle giant of a dog from the brilliant comic strip Cul de Sac by the late Richard Thompson.
By the way, if anyone here lived on the South Shore and gave up a tabby/white mix named Willow in the fall of 2018: 1. thank you, she has enriched my life more than I could ever have expected, and 2. she's doing very well and is a very sweet, friendly, and happy cat.

Some of those names are so damn cute. My dog's name is Apollo & my cat is Lady Godiva (but we just call her Godiva for short, she knows her name).
