The last of the disco DJs apparently ended his career on Kiss 108 this morning after bitching about how he was told to stop cracking wise about Demi Lovato's new non-binary status earlier today.
A bitter Matty complained that this is how he gets repaid for being the biggest, most non-lightweight DJ in the history of Boston radio, a veritable giant among lighweights, "bigger than Jess Cain, Dave Maynard and Charles Laquidara and all of the radio giants in Boston." And, well, he just wasn't going to stand for it. "I am the biggest of all time and they said, 'Shut Up Matt, stop talking.' Well I hope you're happy, because I just stopped talking. Matty out."
Mike Saccone got a copy of the audio ending of the 71-year-old DJ's career:

It isn't a cliche, it's a metaphor that is all too apt for a lot of contemporary behaviors.

I stopped listening in the 90s when he went OFF about Melissa Etheridge being on the cover of a magazine with her wife/girlfriend. It was a disgusting rant, and it felt good to say BYE then and feels better if he’s actually gone for good. He’s not even a good DJ anyway...

Back then he was kinda crappy because Howard Stern was winning in every market and Matty had to be more edgy like a PG Stern, I moved to LA at the time and radio there was much much worse.

i’m sure you’ll be downright SHOCKED to know that matty has nothing to do with the music choices. all music from any iheart radio station is programmed by someone in a corporate office in kansas or something and sent to the stations, which they basically aren’t allowed to deviate from.
source: the person who used to be in charge of the music at kiss 108 (which was never matty) and was laid off when that change was made.

Maybe I should have used “radio personality” instead of “DJ”. It’s the old-school coming out I suppose. I’m unfortunately too aware of how commercial radio, which I haven’t listened to in years, works. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not huge Matty fan, but I do respect him. He has never seemed like a jerk to me. Like Charles, he is from another pre-corporate era when DJs ran the show. I'm sure it sucks to have owners who are not in Boston dictating what you can talk about. I would trust a local guy to know what his listeners want to hear more than some fatcat in LA.

He's actively makes fun of nonbinary and queer people and whines on air whenever he gets told to knock it off. Censoring doesn't work that way, arsewipe.
People keep defending him as 'the star of the morning' so he should be able to do what he wants. Funny, that's what people said about Harvey Weinstein, too.
But, on a serious note, for all the people defending him for going off on they/them pronouns:
As some of you know, my day job is teaching (I know, sometimes my grammar suggests otherwise). In the last two years of teaching, I've had several nonbinary students, all under the age of 12, sometimes only feeling safe enough to explore their gender expression at school. When they hear people laughing at comments like Mr. Seigel's, they feel even more miserable than they already are. Nothing is more heartbreaking than talking a fourth grader out of suicidal thoughts because someone they look up to makes jokes like this. So when you defend an asshole like this for just 'being a comedian', don't forget the people listening to him aren't just adults in the car; they're parents dropping their kids off to school, or families who have the radio on at home. These kid of jokes are deadly to children already suffering.

stations: MBR, ERS and ZBC, mostly. But I have always loathed the morning drive-time format, regardless of the station's playlist, and thus have managed to live in Boston for over 30 years without ever once tuning in to this fatuous fat fish in a provincial pond.

The problem I have with college stations like MBR is that they are stuck in a punk rock time warp from 40 years ago (even some of the same DJs!). They have no relevancy or vitality. Between old Disco Matty and the old fart punks on MBR it seems Boston is the place radio came to die.

can be really useful if you love the little sea they're trawling but find that streamers like Spotify and satellite radio stations rarely plumb the depths. At least the doughy old punks and bebop jazzbos and exotica weirdos are obsessives in plowing their narrow furrows, with a much more profound and broad sense of history: they routinely introduce me to rarities and obscurities not found on mass-market channels. If you have a lifelong appreciation for a particular genre, you don't want to hear the same greatest-hits compilations all the time.
I always feel bad for people that have gotten stuck in a glory-days rut, shutting their ears to music that happened after they got out of high school or college or their 20s. Me, I've never stopped listening to new music, including dopey teen-oriented pop: there's often a lot of fine craft in there. My sources include a huge iTunes library (not a track of it pirated), a few cubic yards of ancient vinyl, a couple dozen podcasts, radio, YouTube in a pinch, and streaming services.
I still spend plenty of time listening to hip-hop, blues, jazz (the late-20s/early 30s period speaks to me for some reason), old soul and R&B (I adore The Secret Spot on ERS), old country, folk, classical, reggae, a few decades of electronic dance music (pleasantly surprised that a few kids are producing new drum n' bass in 2021, sue me), and assorted traditional musics from around the world. Bossa nova here, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir there, what have you: I'll eat that. (I've noticed that food dorkery and music dorkery, like many nerdly passions, have a lot in common: I can be a painful bore to normies, but am useful to know when there's a problem to solve.)
Every genre, old or new, benefits from scholarly curation if you dig it. When I'm in the mood for punk and noise and non-poppy metal, it's tough to beat a middle-aged college-radio DJ like Joanie Lindstrom of the Late Risers' Club on MBR. (I could barely contain my giddy fanboy glee when I finally met her in person and got to chat with her for 20 minutes at a Buzzcocks show five or so years ago. Judging from the selfies, I was grinning like a goddamned idiot the whole time, oof.) But the fact is that she's been bringing me fresh joys since she was new at it. Long live them aging punks, and erudite record-spinning geeks of every stripe.
