Matty stormed off the air this morning after his bosses ordered him to stop making jokes about Demi Lovato

Matty Siegel

The last of the disco DJs apparently ended his career on Kiss 108 this morning after bitching about how he was told to stop cracking wise about Demi Lovato's new non-binary status earlier today.

A bitter Matty complained that this is how he gets repaid for being the biggest, most non-lightweight DJ in the history of Boston radio, a veritable giant among lighweights, "bigger than Jess Cain, Dave Maynard and Charles Laquidara and all of the radio giants in Boston." And, well, he just wasn't going to stand for it. "I am the biggest of all time and they said, 'Shut Up Matt, stop talking.' Well I hope you're happy, because I just stopped talking. Matty out."

Mike Saccone got a copy of the audio ending of the 71-year-old DJ's career:

Is it still cancel culture? Good riddance to bad trash. I bet he's playing golf with John Dennis in Florida by next week.

Matty has dominated Boston morning radio for decades now, and still does.

And if your comment is about the jokes he was making, he makes jokes about every topic. I was listening this morning, and he mentioned how he was told last year to stop making fun of Trump.

What he's getting at is that you can't make a joke about anything because someone, somewhere, will be offended. It's the same topic that Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappell, Bill Burr, and several other comedians have brought up in recent years. my guess is all those comedians are also "trash" to you.

Would be great to move towards a culture of "if you don't like it, switch the station." The problem with this, is that not enough people switch the station, and those "offended" are mad about that.

Matty in the Morning isn't above Demi Lovato. It's a horizontal punch when you weigh her status and fame against his maleness and heterosexuality.

up
Voting closed 0

The problem is not that he is offending Lovato, it’s that he’s denigrating and dehumanizing every non-binary person in the world. Which is definitely punching down. Lovato was never the target of his jokes, just a place to start.

up
Voting closed 0

please say it’s a joke

up

Siegel was not throwing a punch at Demi Lovato, he was being dismissive/derogatory to the way non-bianary people choose pronouns. Lovato just happened to be the non-bianary person in this conversation, but it could have been any non-bianary person irrespective of fame or social status, therefore it was a punch down.

In the Globe piece on this he says (paraphrasing) that he's worried about young people being influenced by Lovato and becoming non-binary. He's not a comedian who told an edgy joke--he's an ignorant puss-head. How hard is it to just call someone the pronoun that they choose? She wasn't advocating--just sharing.

Change the radio dial left or right

up
Voting closed 0

The turn the dial argument isn’t relevant... he was told not to make jokes at the expense of non-binary people by his bosses at the station. The station gets to decide what kind of content they want to air. If he doesn’t like that, he can start a podcast and say whatever he wants.

Personally, I always find it to be a little pathetic when people throw these self-aggrandizing pity party temper tantrums. If you don’t grow with the times, they’ll just pass you by. If you want to tell transphobic jokes in 2021, you’ll have to do it on your own podcast. No major market station wants to broadcast that bullshit... nor should they.

107.9 is the end of the dial though

You think the ratings are going to change with some other dingdong in that chair? The format, station power and marketing drive the ratings not some wizened creep.

As eeka points out, there's a difference between making fun of people and performatively trashing a deeply personal decision for yuks. What was his super funny joke he couldn't say about Lovato anyways? From the article it sounds like he was just saying he didn't think she should have the right to identify in a way he didn't like. Because he's an asshole.

he mentioned how he was told last year to stop making fun of Trump.

Funny how that didn't cause him to quit in a huff.

What he's getting at is that you can't make a joke about anything because someone, somewhere, will be offended. It's the same topic that Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappell, Bill Burr, and several other comedians have brought up in recent years.

Comedians used to make jokes about woman drivers, and stupid people from Poland. Comedians used to wear blackface and adopt stereotypical Black speech patterns to make fun of African-Americans.

Those jokes offended people, and those jokes became unacceptable many decades ago, yet somehow the profession of "comedian" has survived. Somehow, those poor comedians of the 50s and 60s found other things to make jokes about (the good ones, anyway), and their audiences continued to laugh. Somehow, I don't think that asking comedians to refrain from mocking the mere existence of non-binary people means that we have finally, at long last, run out of things to make jokes about.

"If you don't like it, switch the station" would be very off brand for I Heart Radio/Kiss 108. They are, quite literally, the station seeking for the broadest appeal, particularly among young people. If someone wants to have a career in offensive humor pop radio isn't it.

up
Voting closed 0

That's his thing. He says what is on his mind, and has dominated for years because of it.

If you want to say that the format drives the station, then why have all the other attempts at the same format failed so bad in the Boston market? That argument is statistically false.

People don't switch the station because of him. The data purely doesn't support your argument, and is the exact opposite.

up
Voting closed 0

Clearly he's been previously playing within the bounds set for him by his employer. Again, Kiss 108 is a station for an extremely broad audience. I Heart Radio is never going to take the "if you don't like it, leave" approach. It's counter to their business model.

Then his mind is shit and doesn't deserve a loudspeaker to amplify it.

the people running the station (who actually have access to this data) don't agree with your assessment, since they're the ones who decided to reprimand him.

What he's getting at is that you can't make a joke about anything because someone, somewhere, will be offended.

You can make any damn jokes you want, any time and place you want to make them.

What you can't do is make jokes into a microphone that is in turn connected to a radio transmitter, while on the clock as a salaried employee, that the owners of the microphone and the radio transmitter and the employer paying your salary, don't want you to make.

I have a good friend who sells advertising for a local station. He tells me a guy like Matty is basically keeping a station like 108 alive (edit: by alive I mean making money locally as the station is owned by a conglomerate that makes money no matter what) . Not saying he should or shouldn’t be fired, but he is a force with a lot of peoples jobs and the stations money on the line. Will be interesting to see what happens here. In general the podcast seems like the way to go for someone as big as MAtty, but maybe not as I’m guessing his salary at 108 is much larger than he would get on a podcast at this point in his life.

Anyway my prediction is that he apologizes and continues with 108, (he is old/rich enough for retire though too and maybe a podcast life is in his future?)

Doesn’t seem like a podcast guy though....he is naturally a DJ.

I have long said that the people that cry the hardest and play victim the loudest are the anti-PC crusaders. Siegel complained about “anti-wokeness” on his way out and “anti-wokeness” and “anti-cancel culture” is just the anti-PC culture dressed up in different names.

Being “anti-woke” is almost always just a lazy attempt to deflect from the fact that you want to say racist, homophobic, mysoginistic or transphobic jokes/bad hot takes and you don’t want to take the heat afterwards.

I apologize to my anti-woke neighbors and colleagues—sorry you can’t tell n-word jokes at the water cooler or call Jim from accounting a f*g because he’d rather drink club soda than do Jaegerbombs. Sorry to politicians and public intellectuals for having to treat trans people like fully human, mundane members of society. Sorry for calling out your white supremacy when it is blatant and on full display.

Sorry that your masculinity is defined by tough guy “humor” and “telling it like it is” and said fragile masculinity is threatened when people push back with the idea of “hey, maybe we should treat people with dignity and respect and also acknowledge centuries of racism, sexism, and homophobia”.

Like who even cares what the content of Matty’s Demi Lovato joke was? Kids listen to Matty in the backseat of their parents car, there’s no need for kids who may be non-binary to hear “jokes” about a celebrities coming out.

Matty laments that for years he has been the #1 Boston morning show of all time but refuses to acknowledge that he is #1 precisely because of the bland, non-offensive content he churns out can be played by every minivan mom between Nashua, Worcester, and Providence. Spare us your martyrdom, Matty, keep it bland, and keep cashing those huge checks.

If you're right, and he's so popular because he's bland, then why don't the other "bland" radio shows, playing the same music, have decent ratings?

up
Voting closed 0

This is a anecdata, but:

The 40-something white moms in my friend circle who drive kids to school in the morning? They listen to Matty because that is the same non-threatening morning show that their moms let them listen to in the backseat with their siblings/friends in the late 80s+90s. It’s nostalgia. I mean some of my mom friends listen to country, but if the kids don’t like country then the compromise is Matty.

Besides, how else are you going to win tickets to the Kiss Concert (Kiss 108 not Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter) if you don’t listen to Matty?

I think it's interesting that you're attacking anti-woke people for being offensive but this entire comment is you attacking people as sexist, racist, transphobic, toxic masculinity etc. based on their view of modern political correctness. You're attacking people for making offensive comments based on stereotypes, but in the same breath stereotyping and judging everyone who disagrees with you on this issue. I thought part of the reason prejudice is bad is because you're not supposed to cast broad judgement on people based on a single characteristic that they have...?

Not everyone who takes issue with new standards of what is and isn't acceptable discourse is a Klansman. Not everyone who thinks that someone shouldn't have their career destroyed because of a single careless remark is complicit with white supremacy. That mentality - "if you don't agree with x than you must be y" - is the problem a lot of people have with "cancel culture" or whatever it is you want to call it - the feeling of being bullied into silence because if someone has a controversial opinion that goes against the mob, they'll automatically become persona non grata.

And before you stereotype me for disagreeing with you - no, I voted for Biden.

up
Voting closed 0

Whose career was destroyed?

Also “cancel culture” is fiction and does not exist.

Here’s the thing. It’s ok to say politically incorrect things once in a while. It’s ok to not be perfect with pronouns or to be in-artful when talking about race, ethnicity, or gender because you know what? None of us are prefect.

It’s not about being perfect, it’s about how you react. Like if you make a comment here at UHub and refer to Demi Lovato as ‘she’ and someone here corrects you and says ‘they’, there is no need to get pissy and feel victimized. Don’t double down is what I am saying.

Look, I still mess up pronouns as a +40 hetero male. When I am corrected I choose to apologize and earnestly try to do better going forward rather than go on an anti-woke crusade. Like, when I call someone I just met Dave and I am corrected with “It’s David” I don’t go on a rant about “wokeness” and get all sad that I am “canceled”. I just say sorry, try to do better, and move on. I respect the individual choice.

For all the people that are saying “stop being so sensitive” I reply back: stop being so sensitive. Simply take feedback in stride and just try and do better and stop pretending like you are the ones being victimized because trans or non-bianary people want visibility and acceptance.

up
Voting closed 0

You're attacking people for making offensive comments based on stereotypes, but in the same breath stereotyping and judging everyone who disagrees with you on this issue

Here's where you went off the rails. Civility is not an "issue", it is a behavior, as is its converse. Being female or Black or gay or trans does not infringe on others. Being a loud uncouth uncivil boor does.

Nonbinary is not trans. No such thing as a "trans umbrella".

Nonbinary and trans fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, but they are very different from each other.

up

I'm aware as a queer person and a clinician primarily working with queer youth that some nonbinary folks don't align with the trans community, and I of course respect this and defer to people's stated identities, but what is your source that there is no trans umbrella? This term is constantly used in trainings/academia/activism by nonbinary and binary trans folks. A quick google search would tell you it's very much an established thing -- which obviously doesn't mean all nonbinary folks like it or identify with it, but I'm not sure where you're getting that it just isn't a thing.

What terms do you prefer for describing the marginalization that's occurring here? I overwhelmingly hear nonbinary folks refer to transphobia or transantagonism to describe this experience.

if someone previously identified as male or female, that is, one of the gender binary, and now no longer identifies as binary, they have changed their gender, sousing the term "transgender" can be appropriate. It's not limited to transmasculine or transfeminine.

up
Voting closed 0

There is a transgender umbrella, it's a widely used concept. But to get beyond just "some people use that phrase" (and obviously gender identity is an area where people can have very particular opinions about terminology) the key thing is that the definition of transgender is "denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex." A person who is non-binary is almost always going to have been assigned some binary gender identity at birth, so in that sense, a non-binary person is transgender. The word transgender (as opposed to transsexual, which used to be more common a few decades ago) was popularized in large part to be more inclusive.

But the important caveat is that since the whole point of non-binary identity is that people don't fit into simple black and white categories, sometimes non-binary people occupy a middle ground of not exactly rejecting their birth gender, and those people sometimes think that the word transgender might have misleading implications, and as such don't identify with it. So I wouldn't go around calling Demi Lovato transgender without qualification, but still, if you're going to talk about the transgender umbrella explicitly as a broad category it seems like they'd fit under it.

But I mean, the original word that was used in this thread wasn't even calling Demi Lovato trans, it was calling Matt Siegel a transphobe. And that's a different question. A person can attack someone who isn't actually trans for transphobic reasons.

He's actively makes fun of nonbinary and queer people and whines on air whenever he gets told to knock it off. Censoring doesn't work that way, arsewipe.

People keep defending him as 'the star of the morning' so he should be able to do what he wants. Funny, that's what people said about Harvey Weinstein, too.

But, on a serious note, for all the people defending him for going off on they/them pronouns:

As some of you know, my day job is teaching (I know, sometimes my grammar suggests otherwise). In the last two years of teaching, I've had several nonbinary students, all under the age of 12, sometimes only feeling safe enough to explore their gender expression at school. When they hear people laughing at comments like Mr. Seigel's, they feel even more miserable than they already are. Nothing is more heartbreaking than talking a fourth grader out of suicidal thoughts because someone they look up to makes jokes like this. So when you defend an asshole like this for just 'being a comedian', don't forget the people listening to him aren't just adults in the car; they're parents dropping their kids off to school, or families who have the radio on at home. These kid of jokes are deadly to children already suffering.

can be really useful if you love the little sea they're trawling but find that streamers like Spotify and satellite radio stations rarely plumb the depths. At least the doughy old punks and bebop jazzbos and exotica weirdos are obsessives in plowing their narrow furrows, with a much more profound and broad sense of history: they routinely introduce me to rarities and obscurities not found on mass-market channels. If you have a lifelong appreciation for a particular genre, you don't want to hear the same greatest-hits compilations all the time.

I always feel bad for people that have gotten stuck in a glory-days rut, shutting their ears to music that happened after they got out of high school or college or their 20s. Me, I've never stopped listening to new music, including dopey teen-oriented pop: there's often a lot of fine craft in there. My sources include a huge iTunes library (not a track of it pirated), a few cubic yards of ancient vinyl, a couple dozen podcasts, radio, YouTube in a pinch, and streaming services.

I still spend plenty of time listening to hip-hop, blues, jazz (the late-20s/early 30s period speaks to me for some reason), old soul and R&B (I adore The Secret Spot on ERS), old country, folk, classical, reggae, a few decades of electronic dance music (pleasantly surprised that a few kids are producing new drum n' bass in 2021, sue me), and assorted traditional musics from around the world. Bossa nova here, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir there, what have you: I'll eat that. (I've noticed that food dorkery and music dorkery, like many nerdly passions, have a lot in common: I can be a painful bore to normies, but am useful to know when there's a problem to solve.)

Every genre, old or new, benefits from scholarly curation if you dig it. When I'm in the mood for punk and noise and non-poppy metal, it's tough to beat a middle-aged college-radio DJ like Joanie Lindstrom of the Late Risers' Club on MBR. (I could barely contain my giddy fanboy glee when I finally met her in person and got to chat with her for 20 minutes at a Buzzcocks show five or so years ago. Judging from the selfies, I was grinning like a goddamned idiot the whole time, oof.) But the fact is that she's been bringing me fresh joys since she was new at it. Long live them aging punks, and erudite record-spinning geeks of every stripe.
