According to my Indian fiancee, Shanti is good for chicken tikka masala and Mumbai Spice is the "best" restaurant for Indian food. Every other place she's tried in the city only Americans would find good. If you go out of the city, she thinks Indian Treasury is the best Indian food outside of NYC/NJ.
my friends, and while most would say they prefer mom's cooking, they cite many other places beyond this three-deep list as worthwhile. None has ever mentioned Mumbai Spice or Treasury, which is very new and devotes half its menu to Greek food. Shanti does occasionally get cited for Bangladeshi cuisine.
The "only Americans" comment is clearly off the mark. I dine out in South Asian restaurants frequently, and more often than not, half the crowd is South Asian, too.
Like Potluck Cafe in Chinatown, which my coworker always referred to as "Chinese prison food" because they used those trays. Best lunch deal in Chinatown or probably anywhere.
And they’ve got some great Pakistani dishes that you don’t see too frequently. Great food too, although I’ve honestly never had Indian food that I didn’t like, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about (yes, I know Chicken Tikka Masala is English food, not Indian food)

My former boss, who grew up in India, swore by Punjabi Dhaba just outside Inman Square.

A friend of mine told me that Punjabi Dhaba was exactly like the food he'd get at roadside stands in India. Love this place.
I’m a big fan of PD, too!

Had a busy work night tonight, got a delivery feast from them. Only thing missing from the dhaba experience was a stamped steel tray to eat it from.

I'll put in a plug for Mehak in Eastie as it's my local go-to for Indian and I usually get the tikka masala there.

CTM was invented in Glasgow in a 'Balti' restaurant. The Haven in JP used to serve CTM many years ago!

Yes, have known many S. Asian acquaintances to praise Mehak. The owner is really lovely, too. A highlight of the area.
