Horseshoe crabs aren't known as fresh-water creatures

Horseshoe crab at Jamaica Pond

So, as Vostradamus asks, how did one (granted, very dead) wind up on the shore of Jamaica Pond?

Bird dropped it.

...possibly an osprey decided it was too heavy, or not worth the effort of breaking into?

I don't think there are horseshoe crabs in Boston harbor.

Yes, there absolutely are horseshoe crabs all up and down the East Coast.

with live Horseshoe Crabs was at a Boy Scout Jamboree on one of the Harbor Islands in the 1970s. Very prehistoric looking creatures in the wild.

African or European?

It would have to be African. It could grasp it by its husk (if it had one).

Now go away you silly English kniggot before I taunt you a second time...

Did it have legs and a body inside, or just the armor? If it was just the shell, a kid might have dumped it there after a trip to the cape. If it had a body inside it would have stunk too much to bring home in a car.

It was a complete, stinky specimen.

Maybe it was scouting a parcel for another life-sciences development proposal.

You joke, but Horseshoe crabs are very useful in all kinds of biological/scientific research, including in regards to a vaccine for a virus you may or may not have heard of...

... so if these critters want to join the life-science boom, I say let them crawl (slowly) to the front of the line!

Yes, I am aware of their usefulness in research. That's why I made the joke.

Horseshoe crabs have blue blood, so it probably wandered over from Beacon Hill.

I saw it early in the am the morning it appeared. That small stretch of the pond smelled awful. There are a pink bucket with a yellow shovel next to it. It looked like someone had dumped it from the beach

Possible first attempt of the saltwater horseshoe crab crossing over to freshwater! Drat. Unsuccessful!

Except for all the fish that spawn in fresh water.

Kids play at science and vivisection and experiments with live creatures suddenly placed into different habitats.

Normal human behavior. Some grow out of it, some focus on it and become expert at it.

When our turn comes, who knows?

A misplaced part of the latest limulus package?
