Rep. Neal slammed for meddling with paid family leave
1st District Rep. Richard Neal has rewarded his insurance corporation sponsors by proposing an alternative to Biden's Paid Family Leave plan that would benefit those corporations at the expense of ordinary citizens.
Produced by the outlet More Perfect Union, the video describes how House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.)—who counts the insurance industry as his top contributor since taking office more than three decades ago—put forward a plan to replace President Joe Biden's straightforward proposal to offer 12 weeks of paid leave to new parents through the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Neal's proposal, released by the House Ways and Means Committee last month, suggests that the 16-term congressman believes even 12 weeks of partial pay is too generous for workers in the United States.
Under Neal's plan, Bruenig explains, the federal government would distribute cash benefits not directly to new parents but to employers, which would then pay insurance companies to provide paid leave to workers—if they meet certain criteria.
Another legislator who's a corporate employee pretending to be a public servant.

Thanks
Thanks for posting. Sent me down a rabbit hole of researching this issue. Neal has one plan blessed by insurance companies, Sen. Gillibrand has the competing plan with straightforward payments through Social Security (and, if you can believe it, there are republican plans out there too*). Compromises will be made on how many weeks of parental leave are given and what portion of pay is given — as pointed out, it’s probably harder for a low wage earner to take the 15% paycut than a it is for higher earner.
Anyways, all this is to say that it’s awfully tough to motivate yourself to dig into the details of these policy proposals. It’s a lot easier to resent that bad guy from WV, bad lady from AZ and those evil republicans, easier to watch this well-done 3 minute video, a lot easier to focus on the $3.5T of liberal priorities over 10 years vs. $1.9T vs. wherever else they end up. Devil’s in the details, and details are hard.
*Really! I didn’t know Republicans still gave a damn about policy. Note that RT endorsement.

Very well said @perruptor!
That's Richie Rich for you
Richie Neal is a terrible representative, entirely beholden to his corporate donors, happy to schmooze with his clan from his old neighborhood in Springfield but uninterested in the rest of the district. Voters of the 1st district busted their asses last year to primary him, which would have been an uphill battle in any case, but got spiked by a smear campaign against his opponent. He'll leave his position toes up or via an ambassadorship to Ireland (I had hopes that that would happen and we'd be rid of him, but nah).
