Vehicle rolls over on Cummins Highway in Mattapan; bursts into flames, at least two to the hospital

Stanley Stacos reports a vehicle flipped over on Cummins Highway where it meets Wood Avenue and Harvard Street shortly after 9 p.m.

The vehicle burst into flames. Firefighters extricated at least two people from the vehicle, who were transported to local trauma centers. One was in such bad shape that the fatal-crash reconstruction team and the homicide unit were called in.

A vehicle travelling on a flat road suddenly flips over. Was it a poltergeist or something? Somebody leave a tombstone in the road?

This was at the intersection of Cummins Highway and Wood Ave. The opposite side of the intersection is Harvard Ave. It's right at the cemetery monument place. It's not flat there.

The crest of the hill is just west of the intersection so cars headed toward Mattapan are on a downhill slope. Coming from Mattapan the grade is also uphill but less in the angle.

At least one of the cars wound up in the front lot of the monument business on the southeast corner per TV images.

Not an expert here but I'd guess that two cars operating perpendicular to each other tried to beat the light or didn't even bother to consider it, took a chance, and lost. From the looks of the cars substantial speed was a factor.

OK, here's why I wrote the item the way I did:

I don't know how the car (if it even was a car, could've been an SUV or a pickup or a van) flipped over. Was the driver speeding? Did he (or she) slam on the brakes to avoid a person who darted across the street? Was he (or she) rear ended first? There are any number of ways a vehicle could flip over; when I wrote the item last night, all I knew was what I wrote.

Sorry, I'm not going to assign blame to a driver until I know better that that person was, in fact, at fault.

Smug asshole reporter here in thrall to (and no doubt under the pay of) the forces of the Car-Industrial Complex ?

Let's go back a couple months when State Police found a dead person on the turnpike in Brighton near an 18-wheeler and a smashed-up car and initially reported the dead person had been ejected from the car.

Oh, ho, another irresponsible trucker causing somebody's death! Only State Police didn't say how the crash happened, so I went with something like "Person dies in crash between car and tractor-trailer on the turnpike" - and, yeah, I got guff about that.

The thing is, State Police later updated that, in fact, what happened was a teenager was zipping down the turnpike at a speed he didn't know how to handle, so he slammed into a barrier on the side of the high-speed lane, which catapulted him across the highway and right into a trucker who had pulled to the side of the road and was investigating something wrong with his truck. Nobody was ejected from the car and the trucker not only didn't cause the crash, he was the victim.

And that's why I'm cautious with headlines for stuff like this.

In the meantime, here's hoping the people who were injured pull through.

It's really unintuitive, but even in low-speed collisions they can just... turn turtle. I've watched more videos from https://old.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars than I care to admit, and yeah, cars are definitely not weebles.

They removed the parking protected bike lanes and now the speeding and reckless driving is back. Good job BTD.

It’s happening all over and in this part of town in particular; anytime the road is clear and at night in particular, way too many people think that they must step on the gas pedal the entire way once a traffic light turns green. There is zero enforcement for this type of sociopathic driving. The fact that crashes like this are no more frequent than they are is the only thing that surprises me.

... and they said that that almost-daily car flipping on city streets was not anything they had ever heard of there. Maybe this is is a Boston-area specialty?

Only celebrities flip cars and kill themselves in CA.

Or on rural (maybe mountain) roads?
