I just can't, cannot, can not approve of that pun @adamg. It is entirely to groan worthy.

Glad to hear the kid got his instrument back though. Does anyone know if it was actually his property or if it was issued by the school?

and reportedly worth $3,000!

That's about what a solid student saxophone costs (unless it's a baritone sax, which will be a lot more). Instruments used by college students or semi-professionals cost quite more than this. And string instruments that aren't complete beginner instruments (we call some of the things kids show up with "violin-shaped-objects") cost a shitload, as do the less-regularly-used instruments. Google the prices for the most entry-level factory-made contrabassoon you can find and prepare to be shocked.

I doubt that the school would expose themselves to that much risk. Students in our HS orchestra had to either rent or buy their instruments.

As for the pun, I like it. At least there's no sax-offender registry.

Every jazz musician is a sax-offender. Just play the right notes.

Really? Any decent school system that cares about the arts should provide instruments. How is a low-income student supposed to learn an instrument if they don't have $3000 to spare?

BPS owns instruments, as do some of the contracted agencies that come in and teach most of the instrumental music. Most of the music programs allow students to participate with little to no fees. The ones that do request a fee from families have a fee of like $50 per year rather than the $25+ per month for rentals from a music shop.

Flaunting?

That's the joke, although since we're in the presence of a pedant, maybe it should have been "flauting."

It was a non-violin offense after all.

The thief blows?

I know it's a woodwind, but maybe horn dog?

I concur. Don't care for the tenor of it. You're going to alienate your bass.

...of the fiasco when the Billerica Philharmonic were doing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" symphony in the high school auditorium.

There was to be a short intermission before the final choral movement to rearrange the stage for the soloists and chorus. The bass players took opportunity to step outside and enjoy a few swigs of Southern Comfort from a flask. But, before ducking outisde to create some extra time, the smokers decided to wrap some string around the conductor's sheet music.

So the stage was rearranged, two stumbling musicians joined their colleagues, and the conductor faced a tricky situation: It was the bottom of the Ninth, the Score was tied, and the Bassists were loaded.

[Ed note: Many more of these fine stories are available, e.g., "Oppornokketti tunes but once"; "He's a typical gnu, and a tiler, too!"; "Crossing a State lion for immoral porpoises"; and, of course, "I have a wife and seven hungry moths to feed."]

I believe it's "immortal porpoises"

That was a good pun, even if the taste was questionable.

didn't get to it first, or it would have been disassembled and surrounded by tidy rows of saxophone parts.
