Fundraising drive set up for family hit by pickup truck in West Roxbury crash

Friends of Mark and Jess Tobin and their three young children - all under 3 - have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family after all five were hit and injured by a pickup whose driver somehow managed to ram out of the municipal lot at Centre and Hastings streets in West Roxbury Friday morning.
The truck then fell on the family as they were on the sidewalk a few feet down from and on the other side of a brick wall from the lot.
Each member of the family sustained significant injuries in the accident, and will need as much support as they can get for their upcoming recovery.

not unsympathetic to the family and the horrors of the accident. But why do they need a GFM? The father is a member of BPD and has good health insurance. There was no damage to tangible property.... Does the family realize that money from GFM is taxable income?
I always wonder if folks that rush to put together these 'rescue' signs of support if they fully understand the implications to the beneficiary.

And I bet people who know the family just want to help. It's basic, simple humanity.

GFM takes a percentage for their website/employees, but GFM money is NOT income. Money donated through GFM is considered gifts. And it does not matter if the family has good health insurance. That might cover medical bills, but it does not cover loss of income.
You really think medical expenses are all?
First, 5 people's worth of copays gets expensive quickly.
More importantly, since every member of this family was hit by the car, they are almost certainly going to need help at home with two 1 year olds and a 3 year old, all injured, to take care of. I don't know if the mother had a job, but neither parent is likely to be able to work for a while and short-term disability usually only pays about 60-70% of salary. Depending on their injuries, they are likely to need PT and OT. They are all likely to have PTSD - imagine the post-accident anxiety when your entire family almost got wiped out while just walking down the sidewalk. There's a good chance that at least one of them had a traumatic brain injury and/or an injury causing long-term physical damage or disability.

You can always tell when
You can always tell when someone hasn’t experienced a life altering traumatic experience or just simply lacks basic compassion. I hope you learn something from the responses, gain knowledge and try to be more compassionate. I swear some of y’all were raised by wolves.
what difference does it make?
The way you used tangible made me think of how traumatic that incident must have been. People are giving the money freely.
So were any charges filed?
For driving over a wall into infants? Or just a big 'oopsie, my bad' and followed by 'ok, but don't do it again'?
Side note: I know many commenters will state that the cops would never charge drivers, drivers all evil, etc... Let's just assume you got your rage rocks off and posted your comments and save us all some time scrolling through the same stuff you always post. I'm interested in any legal insight as to why this person wasn't identified and booked for something like driving to endanger.

Mechanical review?
Often, before charges in a case like this, prosecutors want a mechanical review of the car involved, phone records or a phone search, and or the drivers medical records before alleging criminal conduct. They want to eliminate claims of mechanical failure (remember all those sudden acceleration recalls, etc), see whether the operator was distracted by a phone, or potentially had a medical event.
Curious too
I too am curious how this accident happened. I parked in that same lot on Saturday and couldn't quite figure out how it would have been possible. The curb is very high, and then there is about 6 feet of grass before the wall. It just seems like either you'd almost have to be trying to go over the wall (not saying that's what happened here) or that someone lost control of the vehicle for one reason or another. So, I'm also curious to understand what exactly happened here.

This exactly what I was wondering. Much appreciated as it just seems so odd in a vacuum, given what a terrible accident it was, that the driver just got to leave.
