Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted the news this afternoon:
I regularly test for COVID & while I tested negative earlier this week, today I tested positive with a breakthrough case. Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms & am grateful for the protection provided against serious illness that comes from being vaccinated & boosted.

What explains people who haven't gotten vaccinated in, what, the last 8 months?

With vaccine hesitancy in play, it's important for a small number of politicians, celebrities, and other high-visibility people to get vaccinated early and help reassure others that vaccination is a safe and effective thing to do.

JP resident here. Don't own car and trying to make ends meet. Waited from 12:35 to 2:15 in line with all my fellow strugglers who are still able to stand in the cold on concrete at Bromley Heath for Free Covid Testing at the Anna Cole. Line was from Stop and Shop parking lot entrance, through Jackson station, down through the playground. More Covid testing sites for us less privileged people and vaccine availability needed!! Felt bad for the little kids crying and elderly. Unacceptable!!

she qualified by age and her job - essential services include the govt, believe it or not. and she didn't hide it but posed for pictures as it was done to encourage others to get the shot to save their lives. Unlike Trump, who hid the fact that he'd had the shot for month while encouraging others not to or to wear masks, many of whom have gotten sick and, for some, have died. She also told people right away and is isolating so she doesn't spread it - Trump lied about being testing, lied about the results, and then came in direct contact with 500+ people, including his family (some of whom caught it from him) and members of the military, including survivors of people who died in combat (he blamed all of them for him getting it too). I'll look to Senator Warren for the right thing to do in this case dude. Enjoy Omicron

Northeastern University has banned spectators at athletic events, Harvard is having remote final exams and basically closing campus at least until the start of spring semester, and in Europe things aren’t shutting down. I think the question of whether one of the senator’s protégés is going to be throwing a big party in early January is a valid one.
I don’t begrudge Wu a party, but if she decrees that the Bruins and Celtics cannot have fans at games a day or week later (or even before the event) it will be as bad as it will look.
What's the urgency?
By BostonDog
Sun, 12/19/2021 - 7:46pm
The event isn't for two+ weeks. Anyone who needs to know right now should ask the Wu campaign or the city.
And the city hasn't changed the COVID guidance yet. Anyone who's cancelled anything has done so on their own volition, not a city/state mandate.

As can Notfromboston. In this case, I chimed in because I thought Michael Kepran was out of line in his response. How was Notfromboston's comment churlish and nonsensical? Yes, he has the ability to post insane comments, but this is not one of them. Perhaps if Kepran had made a different comment, I would have said nothing. There is a real question as to whether Wu should have a big gala when Covid numbers are rising. That you think that this should not be mentioned kind of says a lot about you and how you are approaching the pandemic, I guess.

Odds are you're not going to wind up on a ventilator or in grave.
Your odds simply aren't that good if you're unvaccinated.
Immunity isn't perfect, and not as strong in older people
By Tim Mc.
Sun, 12/19/2021 - 8:50pm
Among the unvaccinated, older people are more at risk of death. Among the vaccinated, chance of death is dramatically reduced, but older people are still more at risk of symptomatic infection.
I don't think Delta is particularly more dangerous than Alpha or the original strain, just more transmissible. (Correct me here, though.) Omicron definitely seems to be milder.
It's extremely likely that she has Delta or Omicron.
The shots will protect you quite well from serious harm, but it's not like they're perfect immunity, and they *definitely* will not protect you from getting a "covid head-cold". But so what.
Vaccines in analogy, if you'd like
By brianjdamico
Mon, 12/20/2021 - 8:38am
Vaccines work by showing your immune system *what* something bad looks like and then your immune system figures out *how* to fight off that pathogen.
Whereas with no prior immunity, either induced by vaccines or natural infection, an infection of the pathogen will at least let it get a few punches in before your immune system realizes something is wrong, and now it has to figure out how to fight back while you are already down and the hits keep coming.
So vaccines give you the upper hand in the fight. It's not perfect, eventually the best fighter in the ring loses their title to a challenger, but it's a whole lot better than stepping in to the ring against Tyson the first time you've ever put boxing gloves on.
But if you are actually worried about your immune system's ability to fight, having been well vaccinated against this virus, then the prospect of existing right now without having been vaccinated should scare you shitless. Of course, since you are vaccinated, you don't need to worry about that.

It turns out both Booker and Warren were part of the team of policy wonks on BuildBackBetter, before Manchin trashed it Sunday Morning. And they administer antigen tests daily, so it's a lock that neither will have passed it outside of their households.
Chances are really high that their variant is omicron, in part because Booker is a lot younger than Warren. Omicron does partially evade the trained T-Cells (either from previous infection, immunization, or both), but doesn't seem to cause serious disease in vaccinated, non-immune-compromised populations. The mRNA vaccines, especially those who've had a 3rd dose after 6 months, are quite effective at knocking down the variant infections before they can cause vascular damange.
What everyone keeps forgetting is the "novel" part of "novel coronavirus". This isn't the movie Contagion; there is no one who's naturally immune. It took 300+ years for humanity to get herd immunity to the bubonic plague; it took about 7 years to get herd immunity to H1N1 influenza (1918-1925). And they're both endemic. Expect this to take a few years to get to where we have universally effective vaccines and treatments.
