Dedham's James Joyce Ramble still on for April, but runners will have to show proof of full vaccination

After two years of cancellations, organizers of the James Joyce Ramble said the 10K race on April 24 is now accepting registration - but runners will have to offer proof they've gotten all their Covid-19 shots by then.
Also, the race is limited to 3,000 people, founding Director Martin Hanley says.
We understand that there are folks who have strong feelings against mandates, but the medical evidence is overwhelming that popular venues and events must step up and be part of the solution.

I don't know why I'm surprised
But the idea that we'll still need to have restrictions on outdoor events in the spring somehow pulled out and throttled a strand of optimism and hope in my heart that I hadn't even realized was still there

We don't need restrictions on outdoor events now, never mind spring. There is no stopping the spread of omnicron, this much should be obvious by now. Get vaxxed, and carry on living your life. These people are lunatics.
I don't know about this race, but
Previous races I've been involved in have restricted numbers of runners not because of Covid safety, but because medical personnel are more badly needed working in overloaded hospitals rather than assisting at races. There's absolutely nothing "lunatic" about that.

It's 6.2 miles, not an Ironman.
It is in Dedham (that's near all the Westie Whites) and has been going on for decades.
I know it is not in the JP / Camberville / Brookline / Allston zone, but there are things that happen outside of that world.
...do you think they don't have medical people at 10Ks?
I've ran a bunch of races all around the country, in much smaller places than Dedham, and I can assure you that most organized races will still have EMTs or an ambulance ready. As you probably should, at any event with thousands of people, most of whom are trying to push themselves physically.
Regardless: requiring vaccinations (which everyone should have anyway) and limiting the number of people is hardly "lunatic behavior", no matter where you're located.
Also, are there a lot of Ironman races in those areas?
I must have missed them because I'm not too familiar with many Ironman races that take place entirely in these neighborhoods. I would have sworn you'd have to exit that zone to participate in any but I guess I must not be up on the current sporting events of the area.
It's bigger than you think
Before 2020, it was run in conjunction with a masters (40+) championship. It is odd when you know you are passing someone whose bib (it's on the back) notes they are in the 80+ group, and it stinks when they pass you later on. Add on to that a few thousand plodders and you've got yourself a crowd. I'd say that it is no joke that the course spreads out, so you probably need medical people in 5 places to be safe.
That said, I'd be willing to bet the cost of registration that by the end of April we will not be talking about omicron. I'm not quite willing to put that cash on us not talking Covid at all, but the WHO is saying this should be the last year of Covid, and if this pandemic has taught us nothing, it has taught us that the WHO is always right with infectious diseases (/s)

How about in this instance an "outdoor event" where people are standing shoulder to shoulder, front to back before the race begins? And then there's the various water stops where athletes and volunteers come in close contact, but we're sure you've carefully considered all the risks so the event organizers with over thirty five years of experience don't have to. That's kind of you.

"true spirit" of what? We're pretty sure Mr. Joyce got his immunization for smallpox so probably no need to check his gravesite in Zurich. The race also includes a national championship (USA Track & Field) for Masters runners coming from all over the country to compete and many of them are over 65 so there's also that. It's probably prudent for event organizers to plan ahead for a virus which might behave differently in four months and be pro active. By the way many races all across the country are doing the same restriction for their participants, for instance...The B.A.A. Boston Marathon a week before the Ramble in Dedham.

Plenty of compliance at the C's Sunday night.
You first have to show vax card and id to two guys who look and dress like the rats from Chicken Run, then you walk past two people wearing bulletproof vests who look like they were just sent over by the same agency which supplies T Customer Service Reps, then you do regular security theatre, then tickets.
It is funny to say the lease.
At each tv timeout the security guards would hold up small signs saying please mask up. It was fine.

If only the MBTA could have the same rule. I strongly believe that's how my fully vaxed ass got Covid from taking the crowded Orange Line with homeless unmasked stretched out on for seats at Forest Hills and nobody giving a shit about it as I was going to my job everyday.

The pandemic and a few other things (like the march of time) has affected my running ability. I did the Corrib in September and while it was not my best outing, I did finish strong. Of course, the downhill helped that strong finish, which I won't get in Dedham.
