Durgin-Park could become a marijuana mart

Durgin-Park Indian pudding

Imagine this infused with THC.

They could hire grumpy salespeople and sell THC-infused Indian Pudding. A former hedge-fund manager turned potrepreneur and two partners go before the Wharf District Council next week to detail their plans to turn the shuttered Durgin-Park in Faneuil Hall Marketplace into a cannabis shop.

Victor Chiang of Cypress Tree Management, Eric Lawrence and Mike Bivins are scheduled to detail their proposed Vinyl Roots proposal in a Zoom meeting that starts at 5 p.m. on March 15.

This would be the second time somebody has proposed turning one of Boston's fabled old-school restaurants into a marijuana store. Last year, a group affiliated with the Royale nightclub proposed converting the shuttered Jacob Wirth on Stuart Street into a cannabis outlet. However, nothing ever came of that plan and somebody else is now proposing to re-open it as the bar and restaurant it once was.

Where are Bell and Devoe? Will there be (grumpy) singing and dancing? I have many questions.

Can't sing, can sort of dance. He's just cool and good with money.

Ronnie stays in Atlanta with his wife a singer from Blaque, Shamari Fears.

Ricky is the mystery guy. Who knows.

Mike has been trying to get in development in Boston for a few years. He bid on the Blair lot with the ID8 development group. https://www.baystatebanner.com/2020/03/11/two-teams-submit-bids-for-blai...

He's trying to catch up he should've been investing here 20 years ago (maybe he was and is just now developing) but he was trying to get failed groups like the "Beano Boyz" off the ground. https://singersroom.com/content/2015-09-08/michael-bivins-group-the-bean...

I hope this works out for him

Well, as long as they're still deliberately rude, and have Indian pudding, I'm sure it will work out okay.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is THE prime location for student groups visiting Boston to have their lunch and shopping stops. When the principals hear about this, the s*** will hit the fan. Yes, I know it's legal and all that, but we [tour guides] have to work with the perceptions of school administrators from all across the country.

And if we are barred from stopping at Quincy Market, frankly, there aren't many other places we can go. It will make Boston a much less desirable place for groups to visit.

I'm surprised that the management of Quincy Market is willing to allow this. I recall that there was another application to put a cannabis store in the market complex a few years ago, and it turned our that the applicants hadn't gotten the permission of their landlord. They were forced to pull the application before it even went to a hearing.

I would have no objection if the proposed location were just half a block away.

Right across the street is junkie city.

Also, Durgin Park is not owned by the city. They are private owners.

It is in Quincy Market per se but the buildings that they are in are not managed as part of the lease agreement which Ashkenazi. Whereas most of the other buildings including all of the main building, some of the North building and all of the South Building are.

Besides, at least it will be a local owned store at Quincy Market and not an open air replica of the Mall At The Plaza at The Galleria in some Ohio suburb.

The establishments in the marketplace that serve alcohol for immediate consumption are not an issue?

Because drinkers don’t spread noxious smoke and fumes.
Unless they are also smokers, of course.

Boston isn’t a college campus , despite what Boston college and Northeastern think

Funny, I don’t recall you posting about the plethora of bars down there. So please, take your nonsensical moralizing and go back to the 50’s.

People always freak out about booze and pot stores near schools. This is at tourist ground zero. I don't see any packies at Quincy Market. (Yes there are a ton of bars, but that's not the same thing.) Put one in the 7-11 near the aquarium or something, but not right THERE at Faneuil Hall.

Reportedly when the McDonalds shut down across the street from Sehpora / the old flower market, petty crime took a nose time in the area. The illegal deals stopped when Big Mac hit the bricks. Now legal deals are coming. Chatham Street and Clinton Streets are going to smell like Stonehill on a Friday night. God bless the security guard working the garage above the Hard Rock. They are in for it.

For all of you pearl clutching, the alleyway behind Al's on State Street and east of Clarke's (Butler's Alley/Change Place) is a well know shooting gallery. I have had people apologize to me with needles sticking out of their arms for their behavior as I have cut through there.

Get back to me when there’s as many fights from stoned patrons as there are from drunken townies, willya.

That 7-11 is long gone.

I've been by there recently, but didn't pay attention that the 7-11 isn't there. Google shows it there in 2018 and gone in 2020, so it hasn't been SO long.

Looks to be vacant now...perfect place for a pot shop!

How are tourists so delicate that they can't stand the idea of a pot shop? There's plenty of booze in the area, in fact there's a great store on State, Federal Wine and Spirits - go down the scary steps to the basement and you'll find quite a wine cellar. They do plenty of business selling nips, so you know that booze isn't going far before it's getting consumed. How is this not a problem but a pot shop is?

This is basically 1,200 feet (or 1/4 mile) from the location approved today by ZBA for cannabis sales at Water & Devonshire.

It's only ~2000 feet from Ascend at North Station.

...go through Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and tons of them are tourists seeking authentic Boston history and stuff.

Durgin Park was one of the most authentic Boston things you could do.

And a nit-wit New York restaurant group didn't have enough imagination to successfully market on that?

I hope those fools lose the rest of places in their portfolios too.

...in Faneuil Hall Marketplace, well, that's the problem right there.

Aren't actually doing that. Cheers at Quincy Market (yes, I know it closed) or something like "Wicked Chowdah" is "authentic" enough for them.

Plus doing business at Faneuil Hall Marketplace is challenging because the tourist traffic is super-seasonal. A place like Durgin-Park would be practically empty 5 nights a week this time of year. Yep, you can make bank in the summer but if you're not getting the locals in during the slow months, it's tough to make a go of it.

Back in the late 70's when I used to live in the North End in my $100 a month apartment I used to go to Durgin Park on a very regular basis. It was actually cheaper to eat there than at a McDonalds. The place was always packed and sometimes you had to wait in line, down at the bottom. If you went up the stairs they would send you back down. Dottie Lamb didn't set the table, she just threw the utensils on the table. She would sometimes sit on the lap of the handsome young man that I often ate with and talk of going on a hayride with him.

I just can't imagine a rude cannabis clerk. If there is such a person I definitely don't want what they were smoking.

So much for the myth that it makes people easier to deal with.

…. smell as good as Durgin-Park did after smoking in bars and restaurants was banned.
