Teen shows up at Roxbury school with loaded gun, police say

Boston Police report arresting a 16-year-old from Hyde Park at the Dearborn STEM Academy on Winthrop Street in Roxbury after administrators found a gun in a fanny pack he was wearing around 9:45 a.m.

Police say the teen, not named because of his age, was charged with being delinquent for possession of a gun on school property, possession of a loaded firearm and possession of ammunition.

Sometimes Magoo wears Fanny packs. But Magoo calls them belly bags. Magoo also wears mens bikinis but Magoo calls them canary smugglers. Magoo.

It’s only a matter of time before one of these guns goes off inside a Boston school. Follow the growing trends and see that the writing is on the wall.

I'm curious. How does one do that? - "get guns out of school now!"

I wouldn’t yell. I would make it similar to getting on an airplane except for taking off your shoes. Walk through a metal detector and put your bag through a scanner. It would be no different than going into a courthouse or other government buildings. Think about it with simple logic and the whole thing makes no sense. Why do we have security checkpoints at government buildings? To protect the people inside from those who are dangerous. Why are we not doing this for our children? They are the people that need the most protection from psychopaths.

Said metal detectors, checkpoints and school police are racist.

That's it? That's all you got? They probably already have metal detectors there, most BPS schools with a high school have them. Plus metal detectors have been in schools across the country for decades. Lots of data out there on their effectiveness or lack thereof.

A school is not a courthouse. A school is not similar to other government buildings in any way. It is a sacred place that needs its own set of policies with the goal of inspiring a love for education and creating a safe place for students, families, and staff. There's lots of research out there on how to create that too. It just takes the will to implement it.

Are there metal detectors at this school?

It is one of many steps involved in solving the problem right now. You mentioned some as well. What are those exactly?

I too think as highly about schools as you do. I offered a real world solution. Please contribute.

Again, more feelings and opinions - a particularly biased one at that. Research, data, best practices, science. This is how we should make important decisions.

Please offer real world solutions. You are simply saying data, science, and best practices. What does that mean exactly?

And will this kid ever be allowed back inside?

Overall, our school is among the lowest performing middle/high or K-12 schools statewide.

If you want a drinking game which will guarantee you get drunk, go to the Mass DOE school report card site and take a shot every time you see the above quote attached to a Boston School.

That's wild. You'd expect a school named "STEM Academy" to be better at science and math than the rest of the district. Instead it's far worse.

We have "science academies" and "advance college prep schools.". and they are consistently awful.
There is a school in Dorchester with advanced placement courses which none of their students have passed in 2 years.

If that is the major metric being used then schools with low income students will always underperform schools with higher income students, on average, which is what comparing them to other schools in the state is - an average. Go anywhere in America and that is the case.

Also, race plays a part in test scores as well. On average white students score higher than everyone else. Which begs the question - are white students, on average, inherently smarter than everyone else or are the tests racist?

It's not the 90s or the early 2000s anymore. We have a lot of data on test scores, income, and race. Colleges and Universities have looked at this data and many of them are dropping the requirement of a standardized test score. We would all do better to leave decades old thinking in the past where it belongs.

Than everyone except New York City, and the low scores in Boston have nothing to do with race or income and everything to do with teaching methods and school management in my opinion.

We don't make school decisions based on your opinion. The data says what the data says.

Not sure what money per student means in all of this, but I'm sure there is data on that too. My guess is that the data says: scores are highly correlated to income and race and not very correlated to money spent per student.

The data can say whatever you like it to say and the fact that Boston Public Schools are very close to being taken over by the State is concerning.. Saying it's because of Race and Income has been the default excuse for way too long. Are Boston Public schools run by racist meanies who hate poor people?

Those sinister things that check what a person knows about a subject.

Get out of here with this nonsense. There is nothing racist about testing people. This logic is flawed and seeks to dismantle merit based education and job placement.
