Covid-19 rate dips slightly in Boston, but hospitalizations keep going up
Statistics announced by the Boston Public Health Commission today show a slight dip in Covid-19 rates in Boston of late, but the number of new cases per day remains far higher than in mid-March.
Covid-19 hospitalization rates for Boston residents, meanwhile, continue to rise - hospitalization numbers have typically lagged new-case rates, because it often takes time for somebody to get sick enough to require a hospital bed.
According to the city Covid-19 dashboard, as of April 23, Boston had a citywide test positivity rate of 6.9%, above the "threshold" of 5% officials had set for taking more active steps, such as requiring indoor mask use. However, other statistics the city uses to determine whether to return to masks and other measures remain below city thresholds; for example, as of April 22, Boston was seeing about 270 new cases of the viral infection daily, which is well below the city's threshold of 339 - but well above what the city considers its ideal number of 68 cases a day.
Although the number of new Covid-19 admissions has increased nearly 69% over two weeks, the total number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 remains below the city threshold of 200, according to city figures.

The numbers don't even matter
They'll never tell people to put the masks back on. Not here, not anywhere. No one has the courage to do it.
If only
If only the White House had some kind of Covid advisor who provides guidance on such things.
I wonder what the poop counts are telling us. If only there were a way to figure that out.
Okay so question:
The current rise in cases appears to have peaked right when the (pretty much completely unenforced) mask mandate was struck down. If cases then continue to fall will you still push to have a mask mandate?
an answer
Most of the mask mandates (apart from transportation) were lifted in early March. In another week or so, the covid numbers stopped dropping and began their current mini-surge.
Really?
1)I didn't "push to have a mask mandate". Learn to read.
2)"If cases then continue to fall"? If your mother had wheels instead of legs, she'd be a bicycle.
Wow. Just Wow.
Do you really think that anyone would look at your first comment and think anything but you were pushing for the reintroduction of a mask mandate?
That's some grade A trolling right there.
Yup
I don't think YOU would think anything else, because the grinding sound of your ax would preclude rational thought.
Oh, go away, Waquoit, you grade A troll.
Again, I learned from the best
But heck, humor us and explain how a comment like-
isn't a call for another mask mandate. And remember that the City of Boston and the MBTA are currently encouraging people to wear masks. I mean, you do keep current with what happens in Boston, right?
He doesn’t live in Boston
Give him some slack. Western MA is a different beast
Okay
But it's not like Massachusetts has a mask advisory.
I was being sarcastic
Sorry, should have added the /s
I got that
Just like how I got how lbb is a clueless troll.
Do you have to be told?
Just wear one. Sure, not the same as if everyone is wearing one, but still reduces your risk.
I'm not seeing a lot of masks off indoors lately anyway. People are moving slowly.
Really?
Exactly who are you talking to?
Your communication needs work, Swirly.
Just to clarify
The reported hospitalization number is not for Boston residents only; the description of the metric is (emphasis added):
