Replacement for shuttered Roslindale Square restaurant could come soon, keep much of its menu, atmosphere

Virginia Schubert at licensing hearing today.

The Boston Licensing Board could decide tomorrow whether to grant Virginia Schubert permission to re-open the Birch Street Bistro in Roslindale Square as Midnight Morning, and, if so, whether it also has any full-alcohol licenses for new restaurant.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports that Schubert, a Jamaica Plain resident, plans to keep her operation similar to that of the bistro, with 104 indoor seats and 30 seats on a seasonal patio. The bistro closed this past weekend.

Schubert proposed hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

A neighborhood liaison with the city Office of Neighborhood Services said that at a recent abutter's meeting, people spoke only in support. At a licensing hearing on the proposal today, Roslindale Village Main Street Vice President Anthony Giordano praised Schubert's plan to keep one of the square's oldest restaurant spaces running.

it would be a damn shame if our archaic liquor laws keep a restaurant from succeeding in one of the nicest layouts of a restaurant in the square

City license database has their license listed as all-alcohol restricted, so sounds like one they have to give back to the city, rather than selling, in which case, presto: the city might have one to give to the new place. We'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Great! Get her in there and get it up and running. Get her a Main Street liquor license while they're at it.

She seems like exactly someone I would trust to know what to do with a bistro.

Excited for such a quick re-opening of this key location in the Square!
