Citizen complaint of the day: Marty's not the mayor anymore

Sign in Christopher Columbus Park that still says Martin J. Walsh is mayor

A concerned citizen takes time out of a no doubt very busy schedule to file a 311 complaint about the sign in Christopher Columbus Park that still lists Martin J. Walsh as mayor and to ask that the sign be changed to reflect the name of the current mayor.

Maybe the complaint came from someone who would have a lot more work if only we updated every sign in the city after each election......

Stop putting current politician names on everything.

but it's a really bad look to stop the practice concurrent with when women of color suddenly started becoming mayor

I mean, his ego certainly isn’t small, but thankfully he ended the practice on the state level.

One disappointment of Walsh is that he kept Menino’s worst habit going, that being plastering one’s name on every sign in the city.

Her point, which I agree with, is that politicians should put there egos in check enough that we don't need to see their names on every sign in the area they govern. My point was that Mitt Romney was the first politician to see how stupid the practice was and ceased it on the state level (props to Patrick and Baker for keeping the new order up.) And mind you, basically the only reason he ran for governor was to run for President, so 4 years of free advertisements would have only helped him.

Again, I loved Marty Walsh even before he ran for office, but that he continued one of Menino's pettiest practices annoyed me to no end.

Guarantee that this 311 caller will be the one to complain about wasted money in government. Now think about changing the name involves, take the sign down bring it to a sign shop have Walsh's name removed have the mayor's name put on reinstall the sign now we all know that city workers are going to spend a better part of a day doing that uninstalling and reinstalling the sign I'd much rather have the city workers doing actual work than worrying about whose name is on a sign that nobody really gives a care whose names on it anyway

Here is a heretic idea: don't list mayor names on permanent park signs.

This ego-driven policy is well past its time.

It's taxpayer funded campaigning.

What's up with Michelle? Doesn't she know that the first thing you do is plaster your name over every sign?

Who had "Mayor Kim Janey" painted over as many things as possible during her brief tenure as acting mayor last year.

Still get to be reminded that she was “mayor” every day.

311 gets to it, Wu won’t be mayor either.

What's the latest on the statue? Haven't read anything about it since Marty left.

On the other hand, maybe Mayor Wu is in no rush to have her name associated with Christopher Columbus, but is also cognizant of the neighborhood's sensitivities. She made a point of acknowleding "Italian-Americans Day" on the Monday holiday a couple of weeks ago that other Massachusetts were calling, "Indigenous Peoples Day." Solution, leave Marty's name on the pahk.

Why not have the names of previous mayors or acting mayors painted over on all such signs in the City, with the name of the current mayor not added. Ends possible confusion as to who is the current mayor (I mean, that's why the mayor's name is on the sign, right) while allowing Wu to avoid association with Christopher Columbus Park. As a bonus, when the next person is elected mayor, they won't have to change all the signs again.

Columbus never came anywhere near Boston. He was an agent of Ferdinand and Isabella, the power couple who expelled Jews and Muslims from their kingdoms and started the Spanish Inquisition. Why should Italian-Americans be so enamored of him?

Hey 311, someone slipped up and named a park after a genocidal maniac.

The residents of that neighborhood voted on that particular name, not sure why. They could always just have another poll like they did in Roxbury to change the name of Dudley Square to Nubian……..oh wait, the residents there didn’t want that changed. Anyone got any other ideas of how to force, I mean change the name of this park?

I say scrape off a few letters and re-dedicate the park to beloved film director, Chris Columbus. Adding such movies as Gremlins, Adventures in Babysitting, and Home Alone to the American film canon is something we can all celebrate.

Take the whole sign down.

Just put a slide in name plate like those on office doors or walls. Easily changeable with out redoing the whole sign.
Why has no one thought to do this?

It's a tawdry practice.

The office holder doesn't want the name to be changed easily.

Then they'll complain about
the cost of too many replacements

Is priority number one!

If you’ve driven a mile in Boston, you’d understand.

The sign should be updated. That park gets a lot of tourists and it would be nice if they knew that Boston elected Michelle Wu to be our mayor.

Following this 311 callers logic the plaque in South Station should remove Josiah Quincy's name because he isn't mayor anymore.

https://www.theclio.com/entry/32962

The plaque for the South Station Silver Line station should be changed because Thomas Menino isn't mayor anymore.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Station_Silver_Line_2004_p...

Renovations to parks bear the name of the mayor who was in office when the renovations were done. Always been that way. Always will be that way. Those renovations don't just magically appear on their own.

Where would this end?
