Facebook-scrolling driver slams onto Green Line tracks in Brookline, police say

Transit Police report that around 4 a.m. on Sunday:
Operator scrolling through Facebook on their cellphone was distracted enough they crashed through protective fencing and onto the GL tracks at Beacon/Strathmore in Brookline.
The driver will now face distracted-driving charges, police say.

Insurance companies...
should have the right to refuse to pay for damages to the driver's car, or even medical bills for the driver if it's proven that the driver was texting or, in this case, scrolling through their FB page while driving. The insurance company would still have to pay for damages and injuries to others, but the driver should be told, "You broke the law while driving, causing that collision. You're responsible for all of your expenses. Next time, maybe you'll put down the device."
I drive and look around me when stopped at the light and I see people watching YT videos while driving. Really?!
If insurance companies could make you pay dearly for doing that, maybe it would stop.

Maybe the penalty for the results should be the same. Lose your license and/or go to jail.

Yesterday evening I saw a driver….
… blast his horn and then pull around another driver who had stopped for the lights at a railroad crossing. This brilliant driver then got stuck briefly on the tracks as the gates descended and the train rounded the bend. They scraped under the gate. Probably damaged it and took off.
I hope someone who could see the plates reported this. It would have been horrendous. I actually was horrendous even with no blood shed. People screamed.
I hope that driver has reoccurring nightmares and turns in their car keys.
I feel for the train operator
I feel for the poor train operator who I'm sure had visions of hitting the car, and prayed there were no passengers, especially not children. They'll probably have nightmares about this for quite a while. I can't imagine how terrible it feels to be in that situation and know that you have no way of stopping in time.
I got on that train …
… and wanted to offer sympathy to the operator. But when she exited the front of the train at the terminus, her face was ashen and she seemed like she needed time to herself.
Terrible, like you say for any passengers. I didn’t see any. Seemed like a lone driver.

I imagine the operator was scared there might be multiple people in the car, possibly including children. She wouldn't have been able to tell as her train bore down on it. I hope she gets the support and care she must need.

To round that bend and see a car driver passing another car via the sidewalk, spinning a bit to the side and then gunning it before he slid under the lowering gate. The gate bounced slightly. They must be designed to do that and maybe to be thin enough to bust through from inside.
I think she was smart not to sound her horn. The warning would have served no purpose and could have distracted the driver even further.
On the platform we were close enough that any debris might have hit us. Certainly the train may not have come to a full stop till past us.

I'll never understand why the default reaction of every driver around here is that someone stopping for any reason must be an idiot who can't drive instead of someone actually stopping for a valid reason.
I can't count how many times I've almost been hit or seen someone hit when a car stops at a crosswalk and the jerk behind them lays on the horn then floors it around the car in front waving thier arms around in anger and almost killing someone.
It sounds like I'm exaggerating and I wish I was but I witnessed this pretty much weekly when I walked to work in back bay.

My god! I mean--seriously--how stupid can one get? The driver of the car who blasted his/her horn at another driver who'd lawfully and sensibly stopped for the lights at a railroad crossing, and then went around the lawfully-acting driver of the car who'd stopped at the lights at the railroad crossing when they began flashing is far beyond stupid--and irresponsible, to boot. That scofflaw of a driver could've been responsible for people being seriously injured or killed. Here's hoping the scofflaw was caught, and is in serious trouble.

Mind-boggling and yet far too common
Taking a shuttle bus to work opened my eyes to the ridiculous number of drivers on the Mass Pike who scroll through Instagram as if it were completely natural and normal to do so while driving.
It's not much better when I'm driving and I see drivers ahead or behind me texting, reading emails or whatever else.
It is beyond frustrating, incredibly dangerous, and I'm left with a powerless feeling to do anything about it for my own safety and other's.

Transphobic comment
Using they/them for a hypothetical person includes everyone while she/he does not, and using they/them is appropriate for a specific person of any gender who is not named and/or whose gender is irrelevant. It's also the correct pronoun construction for any person who uses they/them as their personal pronouns.
