The Haley School in Roslindale has alerted parents and staffers that one of its students was seriously injured in a fireworks explosion on July 5th, and points them to a GoFundMe page set up by his mom, which says that in addition to losing most of his fingers on one hand, he suffered serious facial injuries and faces a series of operations.

The gofundme says he picked up a firework that neighbors had left lying around. This is a really sad story, and I hope he recovers as best as possible

Read the Go Fund Me. Horrible. He wasn't setting one off. Neighbors didn't clean up the fireworks they had the day before. He picked one up and it exploded.
Not a fan of arbitrary people setting off fireworks. As a kid, we sometimes had sparklers. Our parents watched us like hawks and made us dispose of them in buckets of water.
If you're going to use fireworks people, shovel up all the debris and put it in a bucket of water.
Fireworks don’t spontaneously explode

Especially if they were lit 12 hours ago and didn’t go boom. He or someone playing with them lit it.
Bang snaps

Silver fulminate ones will detonate from abrasion/friction like being thrown at the ground. However, you can't get enough silver fulminate (without combining a bunch of snaps) to take out your hand.
Kids his age aren't smart enough to avoid holding onto a lit firework. These never should have been within his reach. Whoever left them out from the previous night is still to blame.
