Dorchester man charged with smashing woman's nose in, trying to run her over after she didn't say 'good morning' to him as she watered her lawn

A man faces a dangerousness hearing tomorrow on charges he reacted to a woman failing to say "good morning" to him by punching her seven times in the face and then trying to run her over with one of his Mercedes, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports - adding he was nabbed in part due to data from the GPS tracker he was wearing while on bail for an earlier assault.

The victim, 59, was watering her lawn on Balsam Street near Lucerne Street around 9 a.m. on July 13 when Ian Atkinson 33, of Dorchester, walked by her "and then cursed at her for not saying good morning to him," the DA's office says:

Suddenly fearful because of the aggressive nature of Atkinson’s remark, the victim started videotaping Atkinson with her cell phone. Atkinson, who had entered a black Mercedes parked nearby, then left the car, advanced on the victim and began punching her.

Home security surveillance video obtained by police shows Atkinson punch the victim at least seven times in the head. The video then shows Atkinson return to the Mercedes, put it in reverse, and swerve in the victim’s direction before driving away. The victim, who was bleeding profusely from her nose, was able to video the Mercedes’s license plate. She also told police she noticed Atkinson wearing what appeared to be a GPS tracking device.

The plate number led police to Atkinson's home around the corner on Lucerne Street - where they found a second Mercedes registered to him. The victim, who was taken to Carney Hospital with what turned out to be a fractured nose and a hemorrhage in her left eye - later picked him out of a photo array. And, the DA's office continued, she was right about Atkinson wearing a GPS tracker:

Information from the tracker placed Atkinson directly at the Balsam Street location at the time of the assault. Police issued a warrant on Atkinson and he was arrested several days later.

The DA's office adds that the victim at least "managed to bite Atkinson on the shoulder during the attack."

Atkinson was arraigned Thursday in Dorchester Municipal Court on charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (car). Judge Erika Reis ordered him held without bail until at least a dangerousness hearing scheduled for tomorrow, the DA's office reports.
