Police find Hyde Park teen who had been reported missing, then arrest him for the loaded rifle they say he had

Big gun, magazine and bullets

Boston Police report officers looking for a 14-year-old declared missing found him just as he was getting into a car on Alwin Street in Hyde Park Friday afternoon:

Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop.

Officers made contact with all the occupants, and requested the suspect to exit the vehicle. Officers conducted a pat frisk of the vehicle and recovered a firearm from inside. The firearm was later determined to be a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 Rifle with 15 rounds in the magazine.

The other occupants were promptly released.

The teen, who already had an outstanding warrant on another charge, was charged as delinquent for illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and illegal possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

A $2000/weapon tax on firearms, paid by the manufacturer to the federal government upon sale to dealers, would be useful.

Oh, and a $10/bullet tax too.

this gun was not purchased legally by the person carrying it.

If new guns were far more expensive, fewer people would buy them and they'd work harder to keep them locked up.

As a result, used guns would be more expensive, even those sold in black markets. Basic economics applies to stolen goods too.

I'm willing to bet that you would notice that you were suddenly $600 lighter.

Personally, I don't see why a weapon like that is sold to the general public, be the price $600 or $2,600.

this teen didn't pay any tax, nor did his seller.

He means it is good for clearing buildings. Unlike your standard M-16 which is really too long for good maneuverability in such situations. I'm an older vet. I have never used an M4. But I did carry the M-16 carbine version because I was a Dog Handler. Somehow I always went in first (training only). I'm a Veteran of the Peace. That long ago time when America wasn't at war with anybody.

It’s a carbine.

A rifle means the bullet gets spun by grooves in the barrel as it’s fired. The hooves are called the “rifling” pattern. Just like throwing a football, the spin keeps it more accurate over distance.

A carbine is just a long barrel pistol with some more support.

You think most pistols (and carbines) don't have rifled barrels? Maybe you're thinking of shotguns.

I can confirm from handling and disassembling a Sub 2000 that it has a rifled barrel. Basically every modern pistol, carbine, and rifle has a rifled barrel. Shotguns are the only class of firearm that isn't generally rifled these days (and I say generally because there are rifled shotgun barrels made for shooting slugs in states that have shotgun-only deer hunting seasons). Even a little Smith & Wesson snubnose revolver, with a mere 1.875" of barrel length, is rifled.

As to what's a "rifle" and what's a "carbine," while carbines are generally shorter (going back to their usage by mounted cavalry), there's no hard and fast rule. The German "Karabiner 98k" was considered a carbine by interwar standards but we'd definitely consider it a full-length rifle today.

was also described as a carbine.

It's a myth that it was inaccurate. Over that distance, with a telescopic sight, with that target perspective, not much problem for a trained marksman to make those shots.
