Citizen complaint of the day: Christmas came too early this year

An early Christmas tree in the North End

Paul Revere forced to go "Whoa!" to avoid careering into the tree.

A disgruntled citizen files a 311 complaint about the Christmas tree now towering over the Prado and Hanover Street in the North End:

Are you kidding me?! There is no reason to have a Christmas tree up before Halloween. Great way to perpetuate the monopolization and commercialization of a holiday that is not celebrated by everyone. You could have at least waited for daylight savings time to end.

I am soooo not a fan of Christmas or starting the Christmas Season early.

But sheesh.. who pissed in their Cheerios this morning? Just move along if you don't like it.. no need to complain.

I personally find this annoying af, but it hardly merits a posting to Boston 311. There are plenty of social media outlets (including a certain hyper-local blog) where this person would find support and commiseration.

Companies used to wait until Thanksgiving to start up Christmas, but now they can't wait until 12:00:01am on November 1 (or earlier if they can get away with it)

That said, the bloviating 311 poster should transfer that rage elsewhere.

Home Depot and Lowes had their full displays out by Indigenous People's Day. I've been getting "gift guide!" emails from other companies since mid-September. The minute all of the back to school sales ended.

I've been WFH and I haven been out much, but they're getting earlier every year.

...just like swimsuits and beach towels, if you need Christmas stuff when it's actually close to Christmas, you'll have a much harder time finding it.

This is what gets me.

Gosh for bid you rip your swimsuit in August or need A (fake) Christmas Tree the week of Christmas. You are SOL.

I get they push the stuff so they don't have it left over (thus discounting it heavily to get rid of it) but sheesh.

Nothing says ho ho ho like Easter Candy being put out Christmas Day!

I think the back to school sales ended right after the 4th of July.

What...?
The Land of 1000 Feast complaining about celebrating something too early?

If you were to count the North End festas on your fingers, would you need two hands or nah?

More people complain that someone complained.

Must be Monday morning.

I am SO TIRED of people acting like this is new. The old "it gets earlier and earlier every year" canaard. I saw rows and rows of Halloween merchandise in Home Goods in late July. Anyone who is surprised by the North End Christmas tree hasn't been to a CVS or a Family Dollar store in the past few days. Christmas merchandise is everywhere in evidence. It's been this way for decades now. The Hallmark Channel advertises it's lame holiday movies with Jack O Lanterns wearing Santa Hats. And please don't express surprise when all the Christmas merchandise is cleared out two weeks before Christmas, sloppily relegated to an undignified "50% off" table, to make room for the Valentine's Day merchandise. To show how far back that goes, I first saw it in Filene's Basement.

I look forward to the day that Christmas laps all the other holidays and they just start putting decorations and merch out after Thanksgiving again... for the next year's Christmas.

I actually saw them put that tree up. Much larger operation than one would necessarily think. Huge crane, handful of workers, chainsaws, multiple trucks. All in it took about 30-45 mins. Not sure how many trees there are in the city but my point is that it’s probably a big undertaking so someone has to be first just like someone has to be last. If it bothers you that much just don’t look at it until next week.

I noticed a big pile of giant Christmas trees in the salt yard at Jackson Square last week, just laying there, not in water or anything. I guess with outside trees you don't worry too much about 1000000000 needles dropping from the tree as it dries out.

The tree in front of City Hall was up Monday morning, too.

311 is a system for entering requests for city services. What sort of city services was the originator of this ticket looking for?
