Teen smashes into downtown shop, then pedals a Bluebike back home to Dorchester, police say

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester teenager they say broke into a shop at 449 Washington St. in Downtown Crossing early Thursday, rifled through the cash registers, then made his getaway on a Bluebike.

Police say that when officers first arrived at the store, they found one of the front doors smashed and the cash registers open, but no suspect.

A quick review of area surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing the area on a Bluebike and officers were able to track the kid to 164 Westview St., about six miles away, in Dorchester's Franklin Field development.

With the assistance of District B-3 officers, officers knocked and announced their presence. Officers observed an individual matching the description of the suspect, and placed him into handcuffs. The apartment was then frozen pending a search warrant.

The teen, too young to have his name released, was charged with being delinquent for breaking and entering and attempted breaking and entering.

We really need a "Dumbassery" charge. Surely in the colonial laws there must be an equivalent that can be applied.

Without cameras all over the place, this kid would have walked away (well, biked away) scot-free.

The only thing I’m surprised about is that he didn’t use the highway to get home.
