By adamg on Wed, 11/08/2023 - 10:02am
The Newton Beacon reports advocates of changing zoning to allow more growth in its village centers lost "in a bloodbath" in city-council elections.
Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne easily won re-election over Billy Tauro, her opponent the last time around as well, Cambridge Day reports.
In Cambridge, the City Councill will become a bit more conservative-ish, the Crimson reports.

Meanwhile, in the hamlet of Medfordia
Big sweep by progressives aligned with the "Our Revolution" group won all the city council seats except for one held by a longtime incumbent. Candidates from the same group swept all seats on the School Committee.
As a resident, I basically agree with their policies but don't like the fact everyone signed a pledge to and gets material support from the same group. But I voted for most of them so, meh?
The incumbent mayor won, a moderate who who beat out a guy who was one of the last vestiges of Medford being a good old boys club.
They say Medford is always 10 years behind Somerville and this keeps with the trend.
Somerville, with a back yard
Nearly everyone who has moved into my Medford neighborhood in the last 10 years came from a condo in Somerville that they outgrew when they had kids.
I’d love to get a nice place
I’d love to get a nice place with a yard up west Medford but I can’t afford it .
Koch cruised to a 7th term
Koch cruised to a 7th term unfortunately in the Q.
Braintree has a new mayor
Erin Joyce with 52.7% of the vote defeated one term incumbent Charles Kokoros.
I only cast one vote
And that vote was against William “Billy” Tauro.
Why does he do that thing with his name?
Waltham Mayer re-elected
Speaking of folks cozy-ing with MAGAfiles.. The Mayor of Waltham , Jeannette A. McCarthy is just got reelected over progressive candidate Jonathan Paz. Sad.
Oh of course Newton voted
Oh of course Newton voted against allowing people in their enclaves even as they push and scream and shout that poor communities need to build more. Newton residents LOVE affordable housing and density unless it is on their door step. They will donate and rally for causes unless it is on their doorstep. One starts to wonder if their residents do all this outreach in other communities to keep the poor people out of Newton?
We need statewide legislation
How about a state bill called "fuck off, Newton" which upzones everything within half a mile of a T stop. Newton has more train stations than any municipality not called Boston (or Brookline, if you count surface Green Line stops).
Why stop there?
How about an automatic statewide upzoning to 2 family? Abolishing single family zoning would do a lot for making room for new housing while reducing development impacts. That would allow additions to or partitions of giant suburban houses, too, for ma and/or junior to live in.
Pikers...
All new housing should be; Wait for it...
Triple-Deckers!!! /S
Trope
Sorry, but your comment is lazy, misguided and uninformed.
I support affordable and low-income housing 100%
That is NOT what this election was about.
Newton, and Massachusetts, does NOT NEED more $1M condos.
I must disagree. You know
I must disagree. You know who moves into 1 Million Dollar Condos in Newton? People who want to live in Newton. Likely people who were already renting here. Vacating rental housing that other people who want to live here can live in.
A number of townhouses and large apartments have gone up around me near that price point have all sold quickly assuming they were updated. Unlike some at much higher prices points.
We have a massive shortage of housing. People want to live here, build places for them to live.
Housing is not some magical monster, it is constrained by supply being so outpaced by demand.
This makes no sense and I
This makes no sense and I hear it a lot, which is that you're against upzoning because it will make housing more expensive.
Really disappointed
There is a group working to advocate for the new zoning overlay (aka “taller buildings”) but there is indeed a huge group of nimbys fighting to “save our villages.” From what? Apartments over a storefront?
Lots of misinformation on Newton social media too. We need to regroup and fight back harder.
By my counter there are
By my counter there are actually at least 3.
Rightsize Newton
Save our Villages
Save Nonantum
I actually told the door knockers that I was not voting for David Micley over him being to modest in his housing proposals.
I also somehow got on Rightsize Newton's email list, which at first pissed me off, but then I figured at least then I know who NOT to vote for.
Oh the Crimson
"two of its most progressive members, Quinton Y. Zondervan and Dennis J. Carlone, decline to seek reelection this year."
I think they meant Quinton and Mallon. Carlone is a dinosaur.
