The Black Friday of bourbon in West Roxbury

Line from Bertucci's to Gary's in West Roxbury

The line stretched back to Bertucci's.

Gary's Liquors on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury opened at 10 this morning, but by 8 there was already a line outside, people in folding chairs and sipping their Dunk's as they waited for employees to unlock the doors so they could snap up a bottle or two, or three, of the "special reserve" bourbon for sale today only.

Why, there were people there from as far away as Dedham and Arlington, lining uip outside Gary's waiting to get their hands on some of the 430 bottles Gary's had.

By 10:15, even with the doors open and customers quickly getting in and out, the line stretched all the way to Bertucci's, at the other end of the mall. The parking lot, normally mostly empty on a Sunday, was full, with more drivers having to wait on the parkway itself for a space to open up.

As we sloooowly inched our way into the parking lot for our Sunday bagels at Bruegger's and hot chocolate at JP Licks. It's not like West Roxbury is surrounded by dry towns or something.

So we asked and learned, no, it wasn't just a last-minute libations run; there was special bourbon afoot.

These "special" bottlings for a specific store are a gimmick.

Even if the store "picked" out a barrel, the likelihood of there being substantial enough variation that you would even know (or care) is pretty low.

No. You are misinformed.

When you stand in a rick house and sample twenty different barrels, you can tell the difference.

I'm surrounded by whisky, whiskey, and bourbon drinkers, and I asked if these were special items. They are.

Going to any liquor store only works if you just want some brandy for a recipe or your motivation is to get drunk, not to get something rare to reverently sip while you dive into a good book of a cold evening.

Fantastic selection, very reasonable prices. Nice staff. No I don't know or work for the owner. Just used to buy there many times.

Yells: I just wanted to comment on this bourbon post that I don’t like bourbon!

See? no one cares. Why even comment at all?
