Hydrant-shoveling kids in Boston and Brookline can get an ice-cream gift card

State Rep. Bill MacGregor, who represents West Roxbury and a smidge of Brookline, says he'll send a $5 JP Licks gift card to any young'un in Boston or Brookline who shovels out a hydrant when it's safe to do so after the weekend storm then has a parent take a photo on Instagram, tagged @votebillmacgregor and fills out a form.

from 01/28/2022, City Councilor was giving $10.

New District 4 (Dorchester, Mattapan, bits of Roslindale and JP) Councilor Brian Worrell is offering $10 gift certificates to Fields Corner's Chill on Park to anybody in his district under 18 who sends in a photo of a hydrant they've shoveled out. Worrell credits former District 6 (JP, West Roxbury, Mission Hill) Councilor Matt O'Malley for the idea.

The City did an Adopt-a-Hydrant test which I didn't realize was an experiment until now, lol. I wish I got a gift card for taking care of my adoptive hydrant. ha ha ha

This is such a lovely gesture. It would be phenomenal if JP Licks would kick in and discount a single scoop ice cream cone from $5.80 to $5.00 for these kids.

To me it just looks like a politician trying to endear himself to the public and get some free pr.
Plus he’s awful cheap. That’s a lot of child labor for only $5.

I didn't say anything about what the kids should or shouldn't get. I questioned the assessment of the many hours it takes to shovel out one hydrant.

Keep in mind that the hydrant has all the snow from the street plowed onto it (or in front of it), snow that has been compacted and can be heavy as sh!t, like concrete. I can see an hour in most cases.

to your neighbors and yourself says that anybody who has a hydrant in front of their home should do it, same as clearing the storm drains.
It's nice that JP Licks is offering (really a small amount) for kids to shovel out hydrants, but dad (or anybody capable) should be doing it anyway.
